This is an Internal Employment Opportunity.

The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is seeking an hourly Academic Wage: Laboratory Manager. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term position. This position is anticipated to last approximately three months.

The Laboratory Manager oversees all laboratory floor operations, manages and trains student technicians, produces chromatography data, and approves laboratory-generated data sets. This position fills the laboratory needs of the research group under guidance from the PI, and serves to optimize project pathways for best-quality data and method production.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations (20%)

Maintain laboratory instruments, including IC, Meter HYPROP systems, MilliQ systems, and scales.

Maintain laboratory acid bath, including:

Regular pH testing

Changing of the bath and safe handling of high-volumes of concentrated acid

All relevant documentation, including disposal and testing

Complete regular purchasing, including from on-site and online sources.

Provide highest-quality QA/QC for all laboratory products, utilizing statistical or coding-based platforms.

Assist in the development of procedures needed for ongoing research tasks in the laboratory and field (when needed).

Oversee and maintain data storage systems as prescribed by PI and external collaborators.

Oversee and maintain sample storage, including:

Appropriate storage of samples prior to analysis

Long-term storage andanization of processed samples

Manage effectivepletion and project timelines of all laboratory tasks.

Handle shipping and receiving.

Instrumentation (20%)

Utilize spectrometry and spectroscopy instruments to produce best-quality laboratory results from a variety of in-house and externally sourced samples, including, but not limited to:

Ion chromatography (IC)

Ionically-coupled plasma (ICP)

Oversee and maintain IRIS electrical resistivity instrument, including:

Assistance with development of field methods

Preparation for field implementation

Training of technicians on instrument use

Oversee Meter HYPROP System, including:

Method development and revision

Training of technicians on system use

Managing data storage and QA/QC

Method Development (10%)

Work with internal and external collaborators to develop methods to implement or revise procedures utilized in the laboratory.

Revise, update, and implement laboratory methods as needed.

EHS and Laboratory Safety (5%)

Monitor and maintain laboratory EHS Safety program, including:

Ensure appropriate and up-to-date training of all laboratory employees and volunteers

Assign and perform EHS safety training for all new technicians and research group members

Maintain required protocols to ensurepliance with University EHS standards

Implement new safety programs as required by PI and University EHS departments

Regularly inspect the laboratory space and employee performance to ensurepliance, and implement employee training procedures if deficiencies are discovered

Maintain all eyewash stations, emergency spill kits, laboratory safety binders and chemical MSDS

Update and review laboratory chemical inventory as appropriate or required

Ensure effective use and record-keeping of all hazardous use logs, including, but not limited to, acid bath and ovens.

Monitor and maintain safe and appropriate storage of all samples relative to their chemical hazards.

Manage basic laboratory cleaning procedures, ensuring that laboratory hygiene is maintained.

Oversee annual inspections of all laboratory spaces, including resolution and appropriate distribution of all findings.

Financial (5%)

Handle reporting of laboratory purchasing.

Produce cost quotes for services to external purchasers, ensuringpliance with OSU research guidelines.

Manage database of time and fiscal costs of laboratory methods for internal monitoring and regulation.

Collaborate with OSU Research Finance departments to develop and maintain appropriate laboratory financial indexing.

Liaise with internal and external partners to ensure effective payment processing, and facilitate problem-solving on any experienced challenges.

Laboratory Staff and Staffing (10%)

Assist with position descriptions and interviewing of potential lab-floor candidates.

Maintain scheduling of laboratory technicians.

Effectivelyanize and distribute laboratory projects to lab floor technicians.

Oversee technician projects, including:

Organizing and holding regular individual meetings with technicians as needed

Resolving questions and problem-solve situations encountered by technicians

Training (10%)

Oversee and provide laboratory training and programs, including:

Basic general training for all research group employees

Technical or method-based training for specific lab-floor procedures

Longer-duration training for analytic instrumentation used in the laboratory

Provide training as needed to external individuals as determined by PI

Possess capacity to effectively implement training for new methods and instrumentation.

Field Work (10%)

Complete field work as needed and determined by PI.

Provide trainings needed to support field technicians, especially in the implementation of laboratory-overseen instrumentation.

Provide andanize field equipment for deploying teams.

Drive to/from/between field sites.

Leadership Duties (10%)

Liaise with PI to ensure goal-based approach to all laboratory processes.

Collaborate effectively with both internal and external members of the research group and all levels of partners.

Ensure effectivemunication at all levels, from the laboratory floor to the PI's desk. This should include, but not be limited to:

Problems experienced by technicians

Suggested resolutions and implementation paths

Oversee lab-floor project pathway planning to ensure efficient laboratory progression during periods of growth, and effectiveanization to ensure consistent workflow during normal periods.

Implement PI growth plans to ensure that equipment and resources are acquired in a timely fashion to support ongoing and future projects

Foster a safe, respectful, and weing workplace environment that supports the growth and development of student employees.

What You Will Need

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related discipline and at least one year of laboratory experience performing chemical tests and procedures.

Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills which includes flexibility, adaptability, mentoring, teamwork, and collaborative problem solving.

Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, evaluate, and make critical judgments.

Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity with safe laboratory and fieldwork practices.

Demonstrated ability to contribute to a respectful and weing workplace environment for individuals from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; tfore, the incumbent must successfullyplete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; tfore, the incumbent must successfullyplete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

The ability to lift up to 40 pounds and to stand for long periods (3+ hours) is required for both laboratory and field work. Work in the laboratory requires use of PPE, including eyeware, gloves and other applicable safety gear. Field work requires the ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions, travel by foot over uneven/rugged terrain, and operating 44 vehicles.
