Job Description

Join our dedicated team responsible for newborn screening testing on blood spot specimens, aimed at identifying infants at risk for inherited conditions. Utilize advanced methods such as immunoassay, enzyme assay, electrophoresis, HPLC, tandem mass spectrometry, and molecular techniques to conduct essential tests.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily operations and routine maintenance, calibration, and assist in troubleshooting of laboratory instruments and equipment.
• Document and review newborn screening test data, procedures, and results.
• Release data and reports for use by physicians, healthcare professionals, and newborn screening medical follow-up teams.
• Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and prepare documentation for test verification or validation studies.
• Conduct quality control and quality assurance procedures in accordance with established standard operating procedures and policies.
• Recognize basic problems and assist in troubleshooting laboratory method and performance issues.
• Assemble quality control data for further analysis; identify problems, document issues, perform root cause analysis, and initiate corrective actions.

Essential Skills

• Proficiency in Chemistry, Biology, Genetics, HPLC, mass spectrometry, and Biochemistry.
• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Genetics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) qualifications for high complexity testing, including 6 semesters of Biology and 6 semesters of Chemistry.
• At least 3 months of hands-on laboratory experience.

Work Environment

Work in a 24/7 laboratory setting focused on testing newborn blood samples for potential inherited disorders, crucial for timely treatment decisions. The lab operates in Ankeny, testing samples from Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska. The position involves overnight shifts with a 5 on, 4 off schedule, offering flexibility for weekend and holiday work. Hours are from 9:30 PM to 7:30 AM, with initial training taking place during the day. Work collaboratively with a team of about seven people, rotating through three separate testing areas. Dress code requires long pants and closed-toed shoes

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
