The Louisiana Office of Public Health Laboratory has an opening for a Public Health Laboratory Technician Supervisor in the OPH Environmental Microbiology Laboratory, located in Shreveport, Louisiana. The scope of the laboratorys testing includes bacterial surveillance testing of public water systems for the Safe Drinking Water Program, as mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency, and private well water testing for the Louisiana Sanitarian Services Program. Preference will be given to applicants with training and/or experience performing clinical and environmental microbiology testing and those who have previous supervisory experience.
Three years of experience as a laboratory technician; OR An associate or bachelors degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science plus two years of experience as a laboratory technician; OR Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science plus two years of experience as a laboratory technician; OR Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science plus one year of experience as a laboratory technician. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Positions in Human Testing Laboratory environments must be licensed to practice as either a Laboratory Assistant or a Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Technician in the State of Louisiana as required by Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Personnel Law R.S. 37:1311-1329 and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. - Supervise the personnel and plan activities for the Water Laboratory. Organize the workload and set the priorities for analysis of specimens received. Perform bench analysis as needed.
- Review all test results, quality control, and quality assurance data generated by the Water Laboratory for precision, accuracy, and timeliness. Detect and solve problems and potential problems before unreliable results are reported to specimen submitters. Prepare the Water Laboratory to meet quality standards as required by accreditation agencies, including EPA; and as specified in the OPH Laboratory Quality Assurance Manal.
- Supervise and train Water Laboratory personnel in performance verification, function verification, preventative maintenance and routine use of laboratory equipment used in culture and identification of water borne pathogens; including but not limited to circulating water baths, pipettors, incubators, UV lamps, and refrigeration units.
- Supervise and train Water Laboratory personnel in sample preparation, sample analysis, quality control, quality assurance, and safety procedures.
- Prepare purchase order requisitions for supplies and equipment needed by the Water Laboratory. Review, revise, develop, and recommend to the Microbiology Section Manager analytical, quality control, and quality assurance methods and procedures that are applicable to the Water Laboratory.
