The Department of Medicine's Division of Allergy & Infectious Diseases has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Research Scientist/Engineer 1.
Field of Research
The Research Scientist will perform laboratory research work in support of studies on syphilis vaccine discovery and T. pallidum transcriptomics.
Purpose of the Research Project(s)
The overall goal of the research is to find new vaccine candidates for syphilis, and to test existing vaccine candidates in the rabbit model of syphilis . This position's funding is currently for 6 months with possible extension up to 12 months.
Conditions of Employment
Frequent exposure to laboratory animals. Although animal handling requires the use of respirator/mask, people with a known allergy to rabbit fur are discouraged to apply.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Expression of recombinant proteins and support the work to engineer new vaccine formulations (25%).
Perform rabbit immunizations and monitoring after infections (25%).
Maintain lab supplies and a very detailed lab notebook (20%).
Train undergraduate students joining the lab (15%).
Manage chemical inventories and ensure that the lab is in compliance with Environmental Health & Safety standards (15%).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry. Microbiology, Immunology, or related field AND one (1) year of relevant experience.
Molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation/manipulation, PCR, sequencing, electrophoresis. Western blot, ELISA, cloning, expression of recombinant proteins.
Good sterile technique and the ability to perform tissue culture techniques and maintain cultures.
Willingness to work with animal models (rabbits) and BSL2 organisms.
Ability to prepare reagents, manage data and keep a very detailed notebook.
A high level of motivation, good organizational skills and the ability to work as a member of a team.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Previous work with Treponema pallidum.
Previous work with laboratory rabbits.
