Laboratory Manager Department: Biology Job Description: Rhodes College is seeking applications for a laboratory manager in the Biology Department. The laboratory manager supervises lab prep-work and clean up, oversees departmental work-study students, maintains departmental supplies, and helps maintain safe and effective environment. Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Responsible for biology lab preparation, set-up, and take-down, potentially to include supervised trial experiments. Handle departmental purchases and payments; travel locally for department purchases; serve as contact for deliveries. Maintain inventory of laboratory stockroom and equipment and re-supply as necessary. Monitor and help maintain departmental budget. Oversee plant care in buildings and greenhouse. Assist with care of animal facility. Maintain equipment and supplies for laboratory safety such as eye wash stations and showers, first aid kits, and biohazard waste disposal supplies. Help maintain departmental compliance with chemical, biological, and laboratory safety requirements. Serve as College Biological Safety Officer and as a member of the Institutional Biosafety Committee. Review Rhodes laboratory practices for biological safety compliance with local, state, federal (including NIH and OSHA) rules and regulations; report problems to Chief Environmental Safety Officer and to Chair of Academic Department in which any problems are found. Undergo appropriate training for compliance. Routinely monitor and maintain performance of non-ambient storage, liquid nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water purification equipment, and similar facilities. Oversee maintenance and organization of department facilities, supplies, and equipment to ensure a neat, clean, and efficient working environment, including defrosting freezers and discarding unwanted items as needed, and cleaning the autoclave at least once a year. Assist in preparation of reagents and facilities in department research laboratories. Conduct experiments as needed. Perform minor maintenance of departmental equipment; oversee maintenance contracts and repair of equipment by outside agencies; serve as contact for ultralow freezer alarm. Help with refreshments for seminars and other departmental events. Supervise departmental work-study and RSAP students. Responsible for hiring students and doing timesheets. Oversee the cell culture facility and maintain the cell lines. Job Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Biology or similar major with extensive coursework in Biology is required Laboratory experience preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Demonstrated ability to multi-task and to work effectively and efficiently with faculty, staff and students. Demonstrated ability to organize numerous projects, consistently meet deadlines, exercise professional judgment and attention to detail, and solve problems creatively.
