To perform research, development, and testing functions utilizing multiple analytical techniques (chromatographic and spectroscopic) in the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory. Test samples include samples for quality control purposes, innovations, research, method development, and experimentation on Microban related products. Further duties include managing analytical sample priorities, developing methods for new products and projects, and maintaining quality control documentation. KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Analytical Chemist I Takes custody of samples submitted for testing and conducts necessary documentation review. Performs sample preparation of organic and inorganic compounds for evaluation of their physical and chemical properties. Prepares standards for calibration of instruments. Maintains and calibrates equipment and instrumentation related to daily analysis. Performs analyses of organic and inorganic compounds to determine the concentrations of antimicrobial additives in various matrices by appropriate methods. Initiates and completes studies and testing projects within established timelines. Plans and conducts assigned experiments; maintains accurate records of assigned experiments and studies in the Microban Laboratory Notebook. Reviews test results for accuracy, reliability, and anomalies prior to circulation. Compiles experimental and analytical data. Performs data analysis and reports preparation as required. Discusses results and their interpretation with colleagues, senior analysts, and lab manager. Identifies problems with methodology, products, and materials, and report them for corrective action. Suggests appropriate steps to alleviate problems and implement corrective actions as directed. Properly handles and stores chemical reagents for use with analysis. Follows and maintains proper chemical waste handling and disposal procedures; maintains good housekeeping and safety in the laboratory. Cleans laboratory glassware and other equipment used for analysis. Monitors the lab's inventory of consumables and reagents to ensure that the lab has sufficient supplies to maintain the lab's testing schedule. Assists in writing, editing, and reviewing analytical chemistry lab standard operating procedures (SOPs). Adheres to Microban's SOPs and test protocols to prepare samples and operate instrumentation. JOB REQUIREMENTS: Education: Minimum BS in Chemistry or related degree Experience: 1 - 3 years related Chemistry laboratory experience and/or training Laboratory Skills: Operation of standard Analytical Laboratory equipment & instrumentation Independently identify practical & reasonable solutions in situations where only limited standardization exists Conduct & report results of qualitative & quantitative testing Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
