Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual for a full-time Research Lab Technician position in Dr. Melis Anahtar's laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Our lab is broadly interested in developing novel diagnostics and therapeutics to combat antibiotic-resistant infections. The candidate will play a key role in developing next-generation, sequencing-based molecular diagnostics, including bacterial culture, nucleic acid extraction, molecular assay optimization, and nanopore sequencing. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of sexually transmitted infections with near-term translational potential.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in molecular biology, microbiology, immunology or a related field required.

Licenses and Credentials

Experience

  • Recent graduate with some relevant coursework and 0-1 year's experience preferred.
  • Prior experience in a wet lab environment (including coursework).
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a dynamic research environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques and procedures.
  • Prior experience with bacterial culture and molecular biology is strongly preferred.
  • Willingness to work with clinical specimens.
  • Enthusiasm for learning new skills.
  • Commitment to laboratory safety practices and protocols
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Careful attention to detail, excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize a variety of tasks.
  • Computer literacy, including database tools.
  • Ability to follow directions and exhibit professionalism.

"As part of the daily responsibilities, the Research Lab Technician will:

  • Culture and maintain bacterial strains in the laboratory, adhering to strict safety protocols.
  • Extract nucleic acids from bacterial isolates and clinical specimens.
  • Perform and optimize experiments using a variety of molecular assays, including qPCR and nanopore sequencing.
  • Maintain accurate lab records.
  • Analyze and present data under the supervision of senior researchers.
  • Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot experimental procedures.
  • Contribute a productive and collegial laboratory environment, with participation in journal clubs and lab meetings."
