Innovative Chemist for Coatings Formulation
Job Description

We are seeking a detail-oriented chemist with hands-on experience in formulating coatings such as floor, paint, and automotive products. You will lead product development initiatives from concept to final launch, including lab-scale formulation, testing, performance optimization, and alignment with sustainable standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop new coating formulations to meet performance, regulatory, cost, and customer specifications.
  • Collaborate with Marketing to translate product concepts into tangible formulations through field validation and launch.
  • Execute lab-scale formulation work and scale up for manufacturing trials when needed.
  • Modify existing formulas to enhance performance, reduce cost, ensure compliance, or improve manufacturability.
  • Contribute to cost-reduction initiatives by revising mixing procedures, reducing rework, and evaluating raw material substitutions.
  • Stay current with industry innovations through vendor engagement, trade journals, and seminars to integrate new technologies.
  • Provide formulation support and technical recommendations to departments such as Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, and Production.
  • Address internal and customer-facing product issues through analytical testing, process evaluations, and technical consultations.
  • Conduct field testing and performance validation in real-world environments to support product reliability and quality.
  • Interface with Marketing, QA/QC, Regulatory, Purchasing, and Manufacturing throughout product development cycles.
  • Attend team meetings and training seminars to align departmental goals and share technical insights.
  • Assist with literature and documentation reviews, including SDSs, labels, and tech sheets for accuracy and compliance.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safety-compliant laboratory workspace.
  • Ensure that all formulations and procedures comply with relevant standards such as FDA, CARB, GHS, and EPA.
  • Qualify and approve raw materials, including alternatives, for use in coatings formulations.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelors degree (or higher) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific field.
  • 2+ years formulating coatings (floor care, paint, automotive) in an R&D environment preferred.
  • Experience working cross-functionally from concept to commercialization.
  • Familiarity with green certification requirements and sustainable chemistry practices.
  • Proficiency in analytical and wet chemistry techniques including pH, viscosity, solids, titration, foam testing.
  • Equipment use: FTIR, viscometer, flash point tester, centrifuge, refractometer.
  • Strong documentation habits and lab record keeping.
  • Microsoft Office and scientific software literacy.

Work Environment

The role involves working in a laboratory setting with occasional field testing and physical validation of cleaning procedures. You should be flexible to work extended hours when project timelines require and be comfortable performing hands-on work in both lab and plant settings.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $100000.00/yr.

PTO, Holiday, Medical, Dental, Vision, $10K relocation package if needed
