The only energy council of its kind, the PROPANE EDUCATION & RESEARCH COUNCIL (PERC), a Washington, DC based organization, works with the propane industry, consumers, and partner industries to increase the adoption of propane as a clean, domestic, and affordable energy source. 


PERC has an excellent opportunity for a Director of Research and Sustainability (R&S). This exempt position reports to the Senior Vice President for Business Development (SVPBD) and could be based out of a home office for the right candidate with proven ability to be self-motivated and directed.


Job Summary:

The Director of Research and Sustainability leads PERC initiatives to grow propane demand through research, technology development, and sustainability programs. To be successful, the director must develop and maintain collaborative relationships with research partners, as well as colleagues in the propane industry, allied industries, government organizations, and others. Important functions include leading a research strategy to support market growth, providing technical support to product development projects, and providing analyses to position propane as a preferred sustainable energy solution.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Requirements:

  • Three or more years of directly related experience.
  • Understanding of propane, fuel, and energy technologies; and how sources of energy impact emissions, carbon cycles, environmental goals, etc.
  • Leading R&S strategies, including establishing research and technology development programs to maintain propane’s position as a preferred clean energy solution, and grow market share.
  • Engaging with research organizations, public/private laboratories, industry partners, and others to understand, influence, and align research and development priorities.
  • Serving as a liaison between the propane industry and our partners, which requires diplomacy, professionalism, and confidentiality while representing the industry at various meetings and events.
  • Managing R&S programs, which includes leading teams of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitoring federal grant programs, and other research partnership opportunities, to include propane.
  • Serving as a propane subject matter expert, which includes staying current on environmental issues, market trends, and technologies.
  • Understanding of sustainable energy and proactively identifying research, data, and technologies to position propane favorably in agricultural, commercial, off-road, on-road, and residential markets.
  • Coordinating with communications partners to share technical data and research results.



  • Science and technical understanding around energy and environment.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Project management to deliver results on schedule and on budget.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including public presentations and environmental analyses.



Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related engineering field.  Advanced degree preferred.


Working Conditions:

Office Work Environment (25%-50%)

Travel (up to 50%)
