Duties and Responsibilities

  • *Works under the direction of the Hawai?i Early Childhood Educator Excellence and Equity (ECE3) Project Director (PD) and Principal Investigator (PI) to support the integration of research and policy to inform and support the improvement of early childhood education teacher preparation programs, workforce development, and role of the workforce in program quality improvement.
  • *Design, implement, and analyze quantitative and qualitative research studies by gathering data through surveys, interviews, focus groups, and existing databases.
  • *Plan stakeholder research and engagement activities, including conceptualization of events and managing preparations and logistics.
  • *Conduct participatory action research, to elevate the voices of early childhood workforce members and highlight the workforces role in quality improvement within child care and early education
  • * Perform literature synthesis and policy scans on national, state, local trends to inform research projects and identify gaps in knowledge.
  • *Co-manage project team activities, information and deliverables to ensure smooth daily operations and collaboration.
  • *Collaborate with other researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to support data-driven decision-making.
  • * Assess program effectiveness and outcomes related to various initiatives.
  • *Prepares comprehensive reports, policy briefs, and presentations to communicate findings with stakeholders.
  • *Research grant opportunities and co-write grant applications, proposals, and reports to secure funding.
  • *Attend off-campus community events or meetings that may occur outside of normal business hours or on weekends.
  • Participate in the supervision, development, and training of junior staff to support professional growth and contributions to research to early childhood education policies and initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of a pertinent baccalaureate degree in Early Childhood Education, Education, Social Sciences or related fields and 5 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for program research analysis and consultations; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of early childhood workforce and the workforce role in quality improvement within child care and early education; and familiarity with the local, social, cultural, political, economic, ecological, and regulatory context as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standards and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with community design and development.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, and fluency in MS Office software.
  • If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  • Working knowledge of scientific principles, research design, and research protocols, including analysis and collection of samples.

  • Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawai`i Driver's license (Class 3), comparable driver's license, or other means of transportation which meets position needs.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Masters degree from an accredited college or university in the Early Childhood Education, Education, Social Sciences or related field.
  • Experience working on macro or systems scale problems.
  • Experience working with local communities in the context of Hawai'i.
  • Experience in human centered design.
  • Experience in education and student mentorship.
  • Ability to work closely and collegially with others in small group situations.
