Duties and Responsibilities
(Note: * denotes Essential Functions)
1. Process sediment samples according to EPA approved methods for faunal analyses
2. *Identify and count specimens extracted from sediment samples using regional keys and laboratory 3 reference keys
3. *Assist other laboratory staff with maintaining specimen reference collections, files, and grain size analysis.
4. Search scientific literature for species descriptions and resources
5. Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in biology or related field and 0 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for laboratory work or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience that provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated.
2. Functional knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in the area of biology demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, and terminology.
3. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and systems associated with laboratory work.
4. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes, and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in the area of laboratory work.
5. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members, and individuals.
7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
Supplemental Minimum Qualifications
1. Knowledge of methods, materials, procedures, and techniques used in research or experimental laboratory work.
2. Knowledge of computer databases and statistics
Desirable Qualifications
1. Experience with benthic sample processing and specimen identification
2. Experience with approved EPA methods for faunal analyses and granulometric processes
3. Ability to prepare sketches of specimens using the microscope
4. Ability to observe, analyze, and report objectively the results of research experimentation
