Job Summary

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawaii at Hilo (UHH), The Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy (DKICP), Discovery of novel natural TEAD inhibitors for the chemoprevention of liver tumors, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: $4,701/Mon.

DUTIES: Responsible for collecting samples, isolating bacterial/fungal strains (including marine-associated fungi and bacteria, endophytes, soil microbes, arthropod-associated microorganisms, etc.), strain isolation, fermentation, separating/purifying natural products from different natural sources, determining structures using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Mass Spectrometry (MS), Ultraviolet-Visible (UV), and Infrared (IR) spectroscopy; and ordering chemicals, reagents, instruments, and other items used in the lab. Maintains instruments, including Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LCMS), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), SpeedVac, Lyophilizer, Rota-evaporators, shakers, and incubators. Searches relevant scientific literature, and writes reports detailing the work. Gives literature and research talks at the DKI College of Pharmacy, UHH. Writes manuscripts and grant proposals and presents research data in scientific conferences. Trains laboratory personnel in experimentation techniques. Oversees and provides assistance in training undergraduate and graduate students.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: PhD from an accredited college or university in Chemistry with a specialization in Organic or Natural Product Chemistry, or related field.

EXPERIENCE: Up to one (0-1) year of experience in Microbiology Natural Product Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or Organic Chemistry.

KNOWLEDGE: General knowledge of working in a chemistry research laboratory. General knowledge of chemical and biological waste disposal procedures.

ABILITIES & SKILLS: Ability to collect samples, isolate microorganisms, conduct purification of minor compounds from insufficient crude samples. Ability to work with air- and light-sensitive samples. Ability to run new NMR experiments. Ability to collect Liquid Chromatography/High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (LC/HRMS) data. Ability to maintain an online computer database of samples, compounds, and chemicals present in the laboratory. Ability to interpret 1H- and 13C-NMR, MS, UV, and IR data for structure determination. Ability to follow complex written and oral instructions. Ability to communicate effectively with peers and superiors, both orally and in writing. Ability to use computer-generated spreadsheets to track inventory and use. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Title IX training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee's initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to lift and carry waste containers weighing as much as twenty (20) pounds unassisted.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with modern chromatography and related technologies. Experience with data-mining. Experience with NMR pulse-sequence. Experience with LC/HRMS dereplication of natural products. Experience in microbial collection and culture, and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Experience with LCMS operation and analysis. Demonstrated experience in chemical modification for configuration determination. Track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
