The University of Maryland Baltimore County is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to investigate bioremediation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
The candidate will participate in research and development of a novel technology for in situ bioremediation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The successful candidate will focus on identifying conditions that promote growth an activity of PCB halorespiring and biphenyl degrading miccororganisms on PCBs in sediments.
Research techniques will include anaerobic and aerobic bacterial culturing, cryopreservation, scale-up in pilot-scale bioreactors, gas chromatographic analysis of organohalides and quantitative PCR. Some field work will be required. Publication of research in peer-reviewed journals is expected.
The appointment is in the Department of Marine Biotechnology located at the Institute of Marine & Environmental Technology (IMET). IMET's mission is to study the biology of coastal marine biosystems and ensure their sustainable use, as well as application of marine-derived systems to improve human health.
IMET (www.imet.usmd.edu) brings together faculty members from three major USM research Institutions - the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science ( UMCES)- in a dedicated state- of-the-art research facility located in Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
Ph.D in Microbiology or related fields.
