What the Principal Project Engineer at IP Corporation is: This position is responsible for supporting the corporation's efforts in building a strong project execution foundation, ensuring industry best practices and engineering standards are upheld.
What we require of you for this role:
- Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. Advance degree preferred
- 15+ years of relevant experience
- Manufacturing facility and willing to provide hands-on engineering support at our manufacturing/distribution facilities.
- Capability to perform process engineering calculations and design determinations for thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics and other relevant chemical process operations.
- Proven experience leading OSHA Process Safety Management efforts as related to capital projects.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and track a project plan and schedule projects. (MS project experience preferred). Experience in preparing requests for bid and administering design and construction contracts.
- Demonstrated ability to accurately estimate and track project costs.
- Proficient in AutoCAD software for use in P&ID development and documentation of project scope.
- Ability to lead remote project teams.
- Travel approximately 30% to company locations as needed for scope definition, design development and project implementation. Willingness to adjust work hours and days to complete critical project tasks.
- Hybrid schedule: Onsite Minnesota office work required for at least 3 days per week and up to 2 days remote work approved.
What you'll do as a Principal Project Engineer:
Essential Functions:
Engineering Standards and Processes - 20%
- Establish and execute IP Engineering standards and promote awareness and consistent application of those standards in our manufacturing facilities.
- Monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, performance standards and specifications.
- Perform project auditing (budget, schedule, plans, performance) and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Create, recommend or improve tools and knowledge for project cost estimation.
- Act as a subject matter expert in engineering design and capital project management providing a significant resource for engineers across the enterprise.
- Manage activities of 3rd party Engineering companies hired to assist project engineering, procurement, construction, and management.
Capital Project Management 60%
Provide full management of project deliverables achieving project schedule, cost and benefit as justified.
Estimate project costs for capital budgets. Prepare documentation to properly authorize funding for assigned projects.
Develop project scopes and detailed designs using both company and off site resources. Schedule and provide project status updates to senior management.
Manage activities of 3rd party Engineering companies hired to assist project engineering, procurement, construction, and management.
Ensure Process Safety Management (PSM) compliance for projects.
Provide an example for the execution of capital projects in a professional, consistent,and efficient manner.
Support construction of projects by issuing construction scope, bidding installation resources, and selecting contractors. Directly or indirectly supervise construction contractors.
Initiate and lead strategic engineering project processes, standards, andspecifications optimization efforts.
Mentor and lead Engineers in capital project management.
Lead initiatives to strengthen SME development.
Provide functional development and support of Production and Maintenance.
Coordinate/lead check out, commissioning and startup of new installations.
Troubleshoot plant operations and support optimization of existing facilities.
Lead process improvements across multiple locations.
Reliability - 10%
- Working with stakeholders to create and establish or improve existing standards for reliability processes at the manufacturing locations.
- Set strategy and requirements for the use of the corporation's Asset Management System.
- Establish standards for the appropriate level of predictive and preventative maintenance for critical equipment.
- Identify and establish processes for maintaining critical spare parts.
Process Safety Management - 10%
- Support engineering functions and deliverables within the PSM standard: MI, PSI, PHA, PSSR and Contractor Safety. o Establish, improve audit and correct the Corporation's Mechanical Integrity standards.
- Participate in and lead HAZOPs (Hazard and Operability) and Layers of Protection Analysis for various chemical processes.
- Provide training to affected employees on relevant Process Safety elements.
