PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The Laboratory Technician is responsible for collecting and processing samples. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Collecting various samples (blood, nasal, urine, stool) from daily scheduled donors Preparation of specimens for storage or additional processing. Routing of specimens within the laboratory using proper procedures for Universal and BBP precautions. Preparing specimens for pick up from external laboratory processing. Samples processing including centrifuging samples, Aliquoting Maintains the logs and records for all Laboratory transactions and information in accordance with department and regulatory requirements. Completing all paperwork, technical and non-technical procedures required to process and prepare samples for researchers. Data entry of sample/donor/study information into the program database/information management system following the appropriate protocol and program procedures. Verifying correct data entry. Monitors and records temperatures of heating blocks, freezers, and refrigeration Cleaning and sanitizing workspaces and maintaining the lab in compliance with all Federal, state and local laws and Genentech procedures. Inventories and orders supplies. Coordinating with other internal departments (sample transport, sample repository) Assists with coordinating daily schedule for donors, both internally and with external vendor partners May assist with monitoring all blood results received from external laboratory and communicate per procedures Coordinating product receiving from external vendor partners Providing excellent customer service to researchers/requestors and donors May require other duties as trained and assigned. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Education: Current national certification (required for WA, CA and LA) in Phlebotomy from a Premise Health approved organization OR Certificate/Diploma and Transcripts from an accredited Phlebotomy program with hands on externship completed and passed- total online courses are not acceptable. CPR (BLS for community/lay responder or Healthcare Provider/Professional Rescuer - the copy must include the front and back of card as applicable) Certification must include hands on evaluation of skills by the trainer/instructor. Total on-line courses will not be accepted. Course must also meet the American Heart Association (AHA) standards but need not be an AHA certificate. State Lab Certificate (NV only) State Phlebotomy Tech Certification (CA, WA and LA) Experience: 3 + years of relevant experience in clinical processing, accessioning specimens in a high volume clinical laboratory regulated environment or equivalent transferable skills. Knowledge and Skills: Must be punctual with a great attendance record Skill in calculating dilutions for reagents Skill in pipetting Skill in weighing reagents or specimens Skills using lab equipment including, centrifuge, heat blocks, vortex etc. Ability to perform standard business math (ratios, percents) Experience with database applications to enter and retrieve information. Demonstrated proficiency in using a computer and computer applications. Strong attention to detail, accuracy and commitment to quality. Proven ability to follow instructions and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Excellent verbal and written communication. Ability to multi-task, work independently under general supervision and work as part of a team. Problem solving capabilities and demonstrated basic math skills. Able to work in a fast-paced clinical environment to meet established turnaround times. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time and perform repetitive duties. Able to decipher relevance of information on requisitions/study requests. Have an understanding of HIPAA regulations and Universal Precautions when dealing with patient samples.
