Position Summary: Responsible for a variety of bench top chemical manipulations, including battery test cell assembly, battery material synthesis and material characterization by various analytical techniques as part of the Energy Research and Innovation Group at Bessemer City, NC site.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure safe operation of laboratory processes and value safety over all other goals
  • Work with hazardous and reactive materials in a safe manner
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Participate in the site's numerous safety programs (incident reporting, safe behavior observations, training activities, etc.)
  • Responsible for performing routine chemical manipulations
  • Responsible for battery test cell assembly
  • Responsible for the operation of multiple analytical instruments (e.g., battery test equipment, thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction, microscopy)
  • Responsible for learning various techniques from senior lab personnel
  • Responsible for following written procedures in an accurate, precise, and reproducible manner within Design of Experiment guidelines
  • Responsible for recording laboratory testing results through written and/or electronic documentation in a systematic fashion
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • No supervisory responsibility comes with this position.

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor's degree in a science discipline is required. (Chemistry or Physics preferred). Experience in battery test cell assembly a plus. Minimum of two years of laboratory experience. Must have basic computer skills and use Microsoft Word and Excel.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Hands on experience assembling lithium ion test cells
  • Experience with battery test equipment; Maccor, Arbin and Novonix desired
  • Experience with electrochemical impedance test equipment
  • Understanding of rheology test equipment and test procedures
  • Experience with statistical design of experiments software
  • Understanding of electrochemical systems
  • Thoroughly document research data and results by maintaining a laboratory notebook according to Rio Tinto guidelines, provide timely oral and written updates, write formal technical monthly reports and final reports at the end of a project and present results upon request.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions and vibration. Office environment, laboratories in R&D center, Kilo Lab, and chemical plant. Employee maybe exposed to acidic, caustic or toxic chemicals. Employee may also be exposed to mechanical moving parts.
