Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Senior Laboratory Technician will play a key role in the laboratory's day-to-day operation and contribute to the technical execution and organizational management of ongoing research projects. The Wang Lab in the Department of Biology at Hofstra University invites applications for a Senior Laboratory Technician position to support advanced research in maize genetics. The lab primarily focuses on elucidating the epigenetic mechanisms regulating transposon silencing in maize. The hours for this role will be Monday through Friday 10am to 3pm. This position is contingent upon grant funding.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs routine molecular biology techniques, including nucleic acid extraction, gel electrophoresis, and quantitative PCR (qPCR).
  • Assists with experimental data collection, processing, and analysis.
  • Manages maize plant stocks.
  • Manages and prioritize multiple ongoing research projects.
  • Maintains laboratory inventory by ordering, organizing, and restocking supplies and reagents.
  • Supports maize cultivation through greenhouse and fieldwork, including plant care and maintenance activities.
  • Provides technical support to undergraduate researchers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in biology or a closely related field OR bachelor's degree in biology with a minimum of two years of research experience in a genetics laboratory required
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple research projects effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in greenhouse and/or field settings preferred.
  • Prior experience with plant genotyping and quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR).
