Summary:

The Quality Control (QC) Lead leads and performs all functions within the QC Lab related to the testing/sampling of bulk and finished products in accordance with applicable standard operating procedures (SOP) and work instructions (WI) and provides support to the QC Lab Manager with completing required tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists the QC Lab Manager in planning, organizing and providing direction to all activities in the analytical and microbiology lab areas.
  • Leads, assigns and/or performs all activities within the QC Lab to ensure performance expectations, lab schedules and other related activities are met timely and with the highest level of quality; coaches, trains and provides feedback to the QC Lab employees to ensure performance expectations are achieved.
  • Collaborates with the QC Lab team and other departments to improve lab operations, and participates in special projects as requested.
  • Reviews bulk product testing results to ensure any required adjustments to the bulk is within specification; communicates any out of specs to the appropriate department leaders, as defined by QC Lab Manager.
  • Ensures all equipment is being maintained, calibrated and verified according to applicable standards and specifications.
  • Reconciles and maintains inventory of lab supplies and equipment; reports inventory levels and communicates discrepancies to the QC Lab Manager.
  • Identifies and recommends new/upgraded equipment and/or methods to improve productivity and capacity.
  • Leads and/or conducts investigations related to errors, safety incidents, quality defects and deviations to assure that root causes are identified and appropriate corrective action actions are taken and/or implemented.
  • Coordinates and/or performs training for all QC Lab employees; ensures all QC Lab employees have received the necessary training and are following all applicable SOPs, Work instructions, and cGMPs procedures.
  • Assists the safety department and safety committee with investigations and corrective actions related to safety hazards and/or incidents.
  • Inspects, samples and tests all incoming raw materials from tanker delivery , bulk chemical tanks, and RO water, in both a lab and warehouse environment; manages results to ensure specifications are met according to company and customer requirements.
  • Prepares Certificate of Analysis (CofA) for product test results and completes product releases in the SAP system.
  • Conducts testing and standardization in-process bulk, finished bulk, and packaged products; prepares necessary reagents and equipment (such GC, HPLC, FTIR) required to complete the quality control analysis.
  • Assists QC management with investigations of Out of Specification (OOS) results, which may require retesting and/or resampling product.
  • Completes and maintains SOPs, Work Instructions, records associated with OOS or non-conformance results for bulk product and finished goods and other paperwork according to established company policy.
  • Maintains confidentiality of customer information, product trial information and other sensitive and confidential information.
  • Exhibits regular and predictable attendance and works overtime as needed due to workplace demands. Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in Chemistry or relates science field strongly required. Minimum of three (3) years of previous lab experience in a manufacturing environment required.
  • Previous leadership experience strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of: FDA Good Manufacturing Practices and OSHA Safety Requirements: aseptic sampling techniques; SAP
  • Skill in: solving problems; analyzing data; being organized; providing feedback.
  • Ability to: read, comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions including Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions; wear required PPE as needed (e.g. hairnet, safety glasses, long pants, safety shoes); work as part of a team; train and coach others; develop and maintain good working relationships; be detail oriented; multi-task; operate various scientific lab equipment; perform professional, scientific laboratory work to ensure conformity to company and customer standards; manage time efficiently and effectively.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds manually.
  • A climate-controlled lab environment; the noise level is usually moderately quiet
  • Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time, stand, walk, use hands to handle and feel, reach with hands or arms, stoop, crouch, talk, hear, push and pull.
  • Must be able to work around and be exposed to a variety of cleaners, sanitizers, hot water and chemicals.
  • Must be able to smell and identify and distinguish color for product testing purposes.
