Job Description
The Sheldon Lab in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee (www.biogeographyresearch.org) is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to work on an NSF-funded project. This project is investigating behavioral plasticity in response to temperature change in tropical and temperate species using dung beetles as the experimental system.
This is a grant-funded position and is contingent upon the continued funding of the grant.
Responsibilities
The research responsibilities will include:
(1) running field and lab experiments to examine plasticity of behaviors
(2) developing models to assess population viability
(3) publishing manuscripts based on data in the lab
The successful candidate will also be expected to develop original ideas and pursue novel research questions related to behavioral plasticity and thermal physiology. Supervising and mentoring undergraduate researchers in both the laboratory and field will be required. An additional aim of this project is to build awareness of and appreciation for insects and the threats they face. As part of the team, the postdoc will help develop hands-on activities to distribute to classrooms, interface with K-12 teachers, and participate in outreach visits.

* A PhD in biology, ecology and evolution, behavior, or a related field.
* Research experience in behavior is a plus but not required.
* Quantitative skills in statistical analysis and modeling
* Highly motivated with the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* The ability to bring projects to fruition, demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
* Motivation to engage with outreach and education related to the project.
Timeline and How to Apply
Review of applications will begin on 15 May 2025 and will continue until the position is filled. The preferred start date is August 1, 2025 with some flexibility to extend the start date. The initial appointment is for one year with possible extension up to two years, contingent on performance.
The starting salary for this position is $60,000/year with annual increases contingent on performance. Full benefits are included.
