RHI Magnesita has an amazing opportunity for a Materials Scientist, in York, PA. The Materials Scientist applies their knowledge and skills to support R D, HSE and QC through physical and chemical analysis testing.

Responsibilities include maintaining, calibrating, and operating analytical lab equipment pertaining to refractory ceramics (including but not limited to the XRF, XRD, SEM, TGA, Dilatometer, etc.) as well as supporting in developing the lab with future analyses. Additionally, the Material Scientist acts as the Chemical Hygiene Officer and Radiation Safety Officer for the lab area. They are expected to develop lab SOPs and work on further developing testing standards in the lab. Finally, they must be able to effectively handle project work and effectively communicate with Engineering, Sales, and Marketing.

The tasks will include:

Testing raw materials, finished products as needed to support R D activities using laboratory equipment

Maintaining, calibrating, and operating analytical lab equipment (including but not limited to the XRF, XRD, SEM, TGA, Dilatometer, etc.)

Analyzing different sets of mineral raw-materials and refractory ceramic products with the instruments available, communicating the results with the R D Research Engineers

Communicating with equipment suppliers when needed to execute activities

Handling of chemicals in the lab in a safe and proper way

Act as the Chemical Hygiene Officer and Radiation Safety Officer for the lab area

Interacting with other labs in RHIM to harmonize testing methods

Running regular control samples related to globally calibrated equipment

Lead improvement projects in the lab

Developing testing procedures and ensuring they are followed

Testing of raw materials or prototype products as needed and reporting of results in an organized manner

Willingness to stay up to date on testing method technologies and training

About you

Bachelor's degree in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Geology, or other physical science with at least 2 years of chemistry coursework

Preferred 3-5 years of experience in a lab setting

Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of the operation and care of specialized laboratory equipment

Knowledge of mineral phases and inorganic chemistry

Knowledge of laboratory safety and approved chemical disposal practices

Ability to follow established methods and procedures

Ability to develop methods and procedures

Willingness to learn new tasks, and flexibility in work assignments

Knowledge in the operation of laboratory equipment such as XRF, XRD, SEM, TGA, CS Analyzer and Dilatometer

This position requires that the person be a highly organized, self-motivated individual who can work independently or as part of a group

Knowledge of analytical testing methods with listed laboratory equipment.

Experience with evaluating and testing ceramic components and binders.

Reporting of results in an organized manner

Computer skills: Advanced skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
