Summary
Performs technical analytical laboratory work involving analysis of water and wastewater for compliance with regulatory agencies as well as determination of water and wastewater plant effectiveness and efficiency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
NOTE: This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related duties as needed to meet the needs of the organization.

  • Performs and interprets advanced chemical, biochemical, microbiological and physical tests on potable water, wastewater, residuals, industrial wastes, stormwater and groundwater.
  • Performs quality control/quality assurance program on analysis, equipment and supplies to ensure reliable test results; maintains compliance with laboratory certification.
  • Performs a variety of laboratory tests and analysis of wastewater, raw and treated water samples to determine efficiency of plant processes; maintains compliance with the plant's NPDES permit.
  • Inspects and maintains an inventory of chemicals, solutions, culture media, required reporting forms and other laboratory supplies, equipment and appurtenances.
  • Collects a variety of samples at their source for testing; interprets test results and prepares required reports; prepares, standardizes, labels and dates solutions and reagents.
  • Consults with the Laboratory Supervisor about scheduled activities, analytical results, inventory, supplies and equipment as well as observations about plant processes.
  • Operates a computer to input data, prepare accurate reporting and required documents for submission to state agencies related to wastewater research.
  • Remains current on State and Federal regulations.
  • Performs maintenance, cleaning and minor repairs on lab equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and/or Experience
Associate degree or equivalent from two-year College or university in chemistry, biology, environmental science or closely related field; One or more years' experience in an environmental-related field; and/or a combination of related education and experience.

Preferred : Experience in the public sector with wastewater treatment facility.

Special Requirements
Valid N.C. driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, materials and equipment including those used in standard chemical and biochemical analysis of wastewater
  • General knowledge of the principles of organic and inorganic chemistry
  • Knowledge of water and wastewater collection and laboratory testing rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of highway rules and safety
  • Ability to prepare reagents and assemble laboratory apparatus for chemical and biochemical analysis
  • Ability to collect water and wastewater samples and perform necessary laboratory tests
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Ability to follow detailed and intricate oral and written instructions
  • Ability to design efficient and effective workflows and procedures
  • Skilled in proper sample collection, preparation, analysis, data control and interpretation of results

Physical Requirements
Work in this class is medium work requiring exertion of in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amounts of force constantly to move objects. Physical requirements include balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Employee must have visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, operate a computer terminal, perform extensive reading, and use measurement devices. Vocal communication required for expressing or exchanging ideas. Hearing is required to carry out oral instructions.

Working Conditions
Work is conducted in both inside and outside environmental conditions. Employee is subject to hot and cold temperatures as well as hazards, including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and exposure to chemicals. Employee is subject to atmospheric and environmental conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation and/or wastewater effluent.
