The senior scientist will work independently and with cross-functional teams to assess technologies, develop prototypes, and ultimately be part of creating the next generation of detection products for Smiths Detection. The senior scientist will be a subject matter expert in our detection technologies and assist Service, Operations, and Sales with any issues related to science and technology underlying our products. The senior scientist will also help manage the research laboratories and maintain all applicable health, safety, and regulatory standards.Job duties to include but are not limited to:Subject Matter Expert in chemical and/or biological detectionTechnology Watch and Technology Evaluation of detection technologiesTechnical Proposal Writing and monitoring of external funding opportunitiesScience and Technology lead for cross-functional product development teamsAssay and Method development for existing and new productsPatent applications and reviewScience and Technology support to Operations, Sales, and ServiceManage laboratory and equipment to ensure both safety and operationRepresent Smiths Detection at technical conferences, customer meetings, test events, and other external interactionsCollaborate with global Smiths team at different sitesPotential travel up to 10%, may include international travel QualificationsEducation and Experience: Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a STEM field OR Masters or equivalent degree in a STEM field with 2 to 6 years of industry experience in developing detection products, OR Bachelors' or equivalent degree in a STEM field with 8 to 10 years of industry experience in developing detection products.Technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Chemical Detection Technology, especially ion mobility spectrometry, mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopyBiological Detection Technology, especially PCR, genetic and protein sequencing, mass spectrometry, and molecular assaysChemometrics and Machine LearningStatistical AnalysisProficiency with Microsoft OfficeLeadership skills with small project teamsKnowledge of laboratory and laboratory equipment safetyPossess or be able to successfully obtain a US Security Clearance at the SECRET levelSDI is a Federal Contractor and a drug-free workplace.
