Position Summary:

As a Materials Engineer, you will be responsible for creating, monitoring, and controlling material related projects. You will provide materials expertise in projects that partner with design and manufacturing engineers and ensure manufacturability and performance of devices through proper material selection and processing. Additional projects will be in partnership with Quality Assurance in test method development and material characterization to help drive continuous improvement. The individual in this position will interface multiple R&D projects including design, preparation and execution of experiments, analysis and presentation of results, and coordination with external characterization laboratories. You will be expected to maintain and ensure a safe, organized, and efficient work environment. The materials tested in the laboratory will include a variety of thermoplastics, thermosets, coatings, adhesives, and silicone rubbers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This list is not comprehensive but is meant to represent the most common or important duties of the position. Other duties will be required and/or assigned.

  • Recommend alternative materials for existing or new products (i.e. based on performance, cost, or other requirements) in collaboration with design, manufacturing, and quality teams as needed
  • Develop customized test methods to assess properties of interests (i.e. adhesive bond force; coating durability)
  • Lead projects and experiments involving formulation of silicone rubbers, adhesives and coatings
  • Utilize statistical tools to run projects, design experiments, and draw conclusions
  • Maintain instruments and perform material characterization using DSC, ATR-FTIR, TGA, rheometer, tensile tester, viscometer and contact angle analyzer
  • Perform cost-benefit analysis for alternate materials
  • Work as part of a team to source and qualify new sources of raw materials.
  • Communicate with materials suppliers to source materials and address materials-related questions for projects
  • Monitor and test the performance of current raw materials
  • Prepare reports, analysis summaries, and presentations as requested
  • Drive continuous improvement of quality, process efficiency, and production cost
  • Investigate manufacturing issues to create and implement effective countermeasures
  • Follow proper laboratory safety practices

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelors or Masters degree in polymer science/engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or any other related field
  • 0-2+ years of experience with Bachelors or 1+ years of experience with Masters in a chemistry, polymers and/or materials lab is required with demonstrated knowledge of polymer characterization and formulation of polymeric systems (i.e. coatings, adhesives, or silicone elastomers/rubbers)
  • Interest in science with a strong sense of intellectual curiosity for understanding and solving problems
  • Experience in statistical data analysis and design of experiments is highly desired
  • Experience working in highly collaborative team environments and cross-functional project leading with other departments
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail with capability to multitask

Language Skills:

Ability to read reports and/or procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from various groups including managers, engineers, setup personnel, mold operators, and other production employees.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to calculate basic math functions, figures, and amounts such as proportions, percentages, areas, circumferences, and volumes. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Familiarity and comfort with mathematical concepts and operations including algebra and basic trigonometry.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to quickly diagnose common issues and rationally respond on time.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Maintains a valid Drivers License.

Moderate noise levels and limited exposure to physical risk are expected. Without assistance, must be able to lift to 50 lbs on occasion, sit, bend, squat, twist, stand, climb, and walk for hours at a time. Must have good eye-hand coordination and ability to handle repetitive tasks.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required : Skill to use a personal computer and basic software packages such as Microsoft Office (Excel or Word). Ability to establish priorities, work independently with minimal supervision, and facilitate teamwork.

Equipment Used : Tensile tester, contact angle analyzer, rheometer, DSC, TGA, microscope, viscometer and ATR-FTIR equipment. Telephones, computers, other office equipment as needed, electrical and general hand tools.
