About the Job

This is a 50% appointment through June 30, 2026.

This position is focused on overseeing multiple research projects and developing microbial systems to generate biofuel from agricultural waste materials. This position requires someone to be a trained bioprocess engineer, familiar with microbial cell cultivation. In addition to research, specific responsibilities include monthly reporting, organizing research sharing opportunities among the other lab members and sharing results to others beyond the University setting. Publication in peer reviewed journals is desired, depending on the results generated.

You will be responsible for budgeting your time and monetary allocations, and reporting expenditure history at monthly meetings in order to better manage the project

Major Areas of Accountability

  • 50% Process development involving microbial cell cultivation.
  • 20% Research solutions to solid state anaerobic digesters and applying microbial electrochemical
  • 10% - Write research reports and manuscripts for publication, review referred articles and participate in national and international conferences when needed. Contribute to research proposal writing
  • 10% - Provide training and mentorship to graduate and undergraduate students in the lab
  • 10% - Participate in all activities or meetings organized by the lab, or departmental activities where postdoc participation is required.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in bioprocess engineering, environmental engineering, or other related engineering program with one or more years of research training.
  • Research experience with strong background and experience on microbial cell cultivation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Familiar with GC, micro-GC, HPLC and IC

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in molecular biological techniques such as microbial community analysis
  • Experience with agricultural engineering and industrial fermentation
  • Experience with operating and maintaining laboratory grade analyzers and instrumentation

The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering (bbe.umn.edu) is an internationally renowned academic unit with the core mission of sustainable use of renewable resources and enhancement of the environment. BBE is affiliated with both the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) and the College of Science and Engineering (CSE).

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $40,000 - $42,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 50% appointment through June 30, 2026
