The Senior Research Scientist for Research Infrastructure is a subject matter expert who leads strategic research support efforts across the College of Health Sciences and Professions, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. This position will drive the development and optimization of core research infrastructure, design complex experimental workflows, and provide high-level analytical and technical expertise to interdisciplinary research teams. The individual will also play a central role in mentoring faculty and trainees in advanced laboratory techniques, contributing to shared instrumentation grant development, and ensuring scientific rigor and quality control in equipment-based research.
Strategic Infrastructure and Research Support: Lead the planning and implementation of shared research infrastructure initiatives; design and advise on complex experimental protocols using specialized lab equipment. Serve as a co-investigator or collaborator on research grants requiring advanced technical expertise in areas such as molecular biology, imaging, or biophysics.
Scientific Equipment Expertise and Method Development: Serve as the lead expert for high-end, specialized equipment (e.g., confocal microscopy, qPCR, etc.). Develop, optimize, and validate novel methods for data acquisition and analysis. Troubleshoot complex instrumentation issues that impact data quality or research progress.
Grant and Publication Contributions: Contribute to proposal development, particularly for equipment-intensive and multi-user grants (e.g., NIH S10 or NSF MRI). Provide supporting documentation, equipment justifications, and technical write-ups. Participate in writing methods sections, analyzing data, and generating figures for peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentations.
Training and Mentorship: Mentor junior scientists, postdocs, and graduate students on equipment usage, data integrity, and experimental design. Develop and deliver workshops or documentation on advanced techniques. Provide expert consultation to faculty on emerging technologies and how to integrate them into their research.
Laboratory Operations Oversight and Compliance: Oversee shared laboratory spaces, ensuring compliance with university safety protocols and research standards. Manage service contracts, vendor relationships, and core facility scheduling systems. Guide lab staff or student workers involved in maintenance, ordering, and daily lab operations.
Minimum Qualifications
The applicant must have a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biophysics, Engineering, or related field by start date of the appointment.
Minimum six years related work experience required.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
