The Role
The Formulation Chemist is responsible for all technical aspects of the product formulation, including the evaluation and testing of raw materials, prototype product formulations, process development, scale-up and commercialization of all dosage forms of foods, medical foods, and dietary supplements. The goal of formulation is to develop technically excellent and operationally feasible products in support of Metagenics' global strategic objective of Product Leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Play an important role in the development of products and help bring them to global markets:
- Develop technically excellent new products (tablets, capsules, powders, and liquids) and take ownership of the coordination and execution of high-quality benchtop, pilot and manufacturing scale-up batches for stability, sensory testing, and process evaluation purposes
- Design and conduct robust experiments that deliver on the goals of development projects. Present relevant findings to the appropriate technical groups, both internally and externally
- Develop prototypes to demonstrate the application of new technologies and develop related intellectual properties
- Provide technical and scientific input, support, and assistance to other technical functions within the business. Proactively design and provide solutions throughout the product development process
- Work proactively to ensure adherence to product development timelines
- Provide preliminary cost evaluations for formulation projects
- Coordinate and prepare stability, sensory and clinical study samples. Carry out stability trial testing as required. Provide advice on raw material selection and stability overages
- Maintain accurate records of all development projects. Prepare technical documents such as cost sheets, manufacturing instructions, Job Aids/ Work Instructions, SOP's, raw material and finished product specifications, lab book and technology transfer documentation
- Ensure all required documentation for raw materials and finished products is collected and organized
- Work in coordination with Regulatory Affairs on ingredient and formula approvals
- Evaluate new raw materials as part of the Raw Material Evaluation Process, including both physical and sensory aspects of new raw materials and flavors. Work collaboratively with the Product Development Services team to appropriately qualify materials for global development and commercialization
- Maintain an awareness of current research and new developments in the functional discipline
- Work collaboratively with the Flavor Technologist and Product Development Department as a whole to ensure the best sensory outcome for products
- Provide operational support for Production, including preparation of manufacturing documents, execution of reworks and associated documentation, troubleshooting and preparing scaled down or scaled up batch documents as required
- Support Procurement efforts in evaluating alternative suitable raw materials to avoid stockout situations and/or provide cost savings opportunities
- Work closely with external manufacturing partners to ensure product development initiatives are completed on time and conform to Metagenics' expectations and quality standards
- Identify and present new product and/ or process improvement opportunities that deliver increased efficiencies to the relevant stakeholders
- Perform additional tasks as assigned or required by Metagenics
Basic Requirements
Experience / Training / Education:
- Bachelor of Science (Pharmacy, Chemistry, Food Science, Chemical Engineering) or higher. Advanced Diplomas may be accepted alongside significant industry experience
- 5+ years' relevant experience in the development and commercialization of consumer goods in the Food, Supplement, Naturopathic or Pharmacy industry
- Demonstrated relevant experience and competency in a similar role

Compensation
The current range for this role based out of Gig Harbor, WA is $85,000/yr. to $98,000/yr.
The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.
This role may also be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance.
