Annual Salary Range: $97,700 - $162,690

*Salary and grade commensurate with education and experience.

Job Summary

As an Experienced Materials/Metallurgical Engineer at BPMI, you will work under limited direction and perform moderately complex critical technical functions to support company operations in areas including but not limited to performing materials engineering evaluations and analyses and make engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks. Cognizant areas may include planning, analyzing, documenting, inspection, and testing of nuclear, mechanical, structural, or electrical components, systems, equipment, and facilities. Work may include chemical or materials evaluations, design reviews, operations support, safety analysis, and analysis/auditing of vendor's procedures and systems for quality control or manufacturing surveillance. Work may include independent assessments or participating on multi-disciplinary teams, research and development, and on-site supplier assessments.

This position requires knowledge and application of materials engineering techniques, principles, and practices employed in the area of assignment. You will be responsible to maintain the technical excellence of the Company within the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.

Essential Duties:
  • Delegate broad engineering responsibility for all aspects of assigned tasks with limited direction.
  • Interface with other program organizations to accomplish objectives.
  • Provide technical support and oversight for field operations.
  • Team with and provide technical leadership for the technical effort of other personnel performing related phases of a technical program.
  • Apply knowledge of requirements to work assignment and ensure documentation is in accordance with program quality standards.
  • Participate in standing technical committees.
  • Provide proactive leadership for area of cognizance to address legacy issues, develop process improvements, or maintain historical knowledge.
  • Perform work planning to accomplish major projects to meet project and scheduler requirements. Align resources, identify risks, prepare mitigation plans to meet major milestones.
  • Prepare cost and schedule estimates, and performance measures.
  • Communicate as necessary to ensure Government and senior manager understanding of project status.
  • Perform evaluations which may include analysis for materials conditions, failure analysis, and troubleshooting.
  • Apply materials knowledge to technical and operational problem solving.
  • Prepare and support coordination of revisions to technical manuals. Issue technical reports and recommendations.
  • Initiate, coordinate, design, develop, and implement engineering research and design projects.
  • Initiate, coordinate, design, develop, execute, and evaluate materials and/or manufacturing process development programs.
  • Understand and implement the Company engineering policies and procedures in area of cognizance and related work.
  • Plan, perform, and lead engineering duties on emergent or complex problems to establish root cause(s) and propose corrective action(s).
  • Assume responsibility for the design, development, and test of assigned specifications and manufacturing processes reactor plant components.
  • Conduct technical negotiations with suppliers, conduct production reviews and quality surveillance, follow component manufacturing and testing, and monitor supplier performance.
  • Lead analyses and evaluations of supplier designs for material suitability, reliability, and integrity.
  • Prepare letters to the Government providing technical information, recommending approval of technical actions, proposing technical work programs, or obtaining approval of funding.
  • Review and approve supplier designs and supporting technical reports on assigned components and equipment.
  • Interpret drawings, specifications, manufacturing process information, inspection and test procedures to ensure suppliers are meeting contract requirements.

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • B.S. degree in Materials, Metallurgical, or Welding Engineering from an accredited college or university or B.S. degree in another engineering discipline with a M.S. in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of relevant experience. An advanced degree may be considered in lieu of one year of experience.
  • Requires a security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.
Preferred Job Requirements:
  • Application of materials and processes in the design and fabrication of equipment.
  • Preparation and interpretation of specifications and standards for metallic and nonmetallic materials and processes, and the metallurgy of materials to fabricate plant equipment or pressure vessels is desirable.
