Chemical Biology and Proteomics Research Associate

The Chemical Biology, Imaging & Omics team (CBIO) is growing at the Bayer Research and Innovation Center (BRIC) in Cambridge, MA to contribute to rapidly growing oncology and cardiovascular drug discovery pipelines. In this role you will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of scientists within the R&D organization to apply innovative methods for target discovery and early-stage drug development. We are seeking an innovative and agile individual with a passion for chemical biology and proteomics in drug discovery and professional development in a peer coaching setting. You will work with colleagues in cross-divisional teams from Pharma in both the US and Europe.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities of this role, Chemical Biology and Proteomics Research Associate are to:

  • In a lab environment: plan and execute manual or automated MS-based proteomic experiments to progress drug discovery programs, either independently or collaboratively with chemical biologists in the team;
  • Perform routine maintenance, QC and troubleshooting of Orbitrap-based mass spectrometers and nano-LC systems;
  • Identify opportunities to improve throughput and reproducibility of existing proteomics workflows;
  • General laboratory organization (ordering, maintaining lab inventory, protocol & database management);
  • Routinely present findings at project team meetings, and collaborate with scientists across R&D functions to effectively answer key scientific questions;
  • Stay up to date on emerging methods in the field and maintain a routinely updated electronic lab notebook.

WHO YOU ARE

Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in in Proteomics, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field;
  • Proficiency in sample preparation techniques for quantitative proteomics, including mammalian cell culture, lysate preparation, protein denaturing, reduction, alkylation, digestion, and peptide clean-up/enrichment protocols;
  • Significant hands-on experience with UHPLC-tandem MS systems for proteomics applications, including routine calibrations, quality controls and basic troubleshooting skills;
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment;
  • Curious scientific mind with a passion for discovery and problem-solving.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 4+ years of experience industrial (pharma/biotech) environment or Master’s degree with 2+ years of experience in an industrial (pharma/biotech) environment;
  • Experience in operating Orbitrap or Tribrid-based MS systems and developing related acquisition methods (e.g. DDA, DIA, PRM);
  • Experience with liquid handling robots and lab automation tools;
  • Familiarity with peptide search engines, data analysis software and bioinformatics tools;
  • Knowledge in state-of-the-art proteomics topics, such as target deconvolution (e.g. CETSA, PAL), PTM analysis (e.g. phosphorylation, ubiquitination), covalent inhibitor discovery (e.g. ABPP, intact MS), chemical labeling (e.g. SILAC, TMT), and affinity/proximity-based pulldowns (e.g. AP-MS) is a plus.
