Job Title: Associate Scientist / Scientist, Fermentation R&D
Job Summary: We are seeking a driven and detail-oriented Fermentation Associate Scientist or Scientist to join our dynamic and collaborative R&D team. This role is ideal for someone with hands-on experience in microbial fermentation who is eager to contribute to process development and optimization in a fast-paced biotech environment. The scientist will support the design, execution, and analysis of fermentation experiments, contribute to cross-functional project teams, and play a key role in scaling processes from bench to pilot and manufacturing scale. This position offers significant opportunities for professional growth and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and execute fermentation experiments aimed at improving titer, yield, and productivity.
- Collaborate closely with strain engineering, analytical, and chemistry teams to inform strain selection and development.
- Support media optimization strategies to enhance microbial performance and process economics.
- Contribute to the development of technoeconomic models (TEA) and identify cost-reduction opportunities at scale.
- Analyze large datasets, interpret results, and communicate findings clearly to project teams.
- Maintain lab notebooks, prepare technical reports, and draft SOPs in compliance with internal standards.
- Participate in the operation, calibration, and routine maintenance of fermentation equipment.
- Work with external partners (CROs and CMOs) to support process transfer and scale-up.
- Provide mentorship to junior team members and support a collaborative, safety-conscious lab environment.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Solid foundation in microbial fermentation, biochemical processes, and process development.
- Proficient in operating and troubleshooting bench-scale bioreactors, including fed-batch and high-cell-density fermentations.
- Experience with data analysis tools such as JMP or Python; familiarity with process monitoring and statistical analysis.
- Understanding of downstream processing (e.g., centrifugation, filtration, homogenization) is a plus.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; strong organizational and documentation practices.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team; adaptable to evolving project needs.
- Familiarity with LIMS (such as Benchling) and automation tools is advantageous.
Education & Experience:
- B.S. with 5+ years of industry experience, M.S. with 3+ years of industry experience, or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related field.
- Prior experience working with a range of fermentation scales-from microtiter plates to pilot/manufacturing-is preferred.
