The Chemist/Environmental, Health and Safety Administrator is located at The Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center (ASC), a state-of-the-art facility housing the NC Department of Agriculture regulatory laboratories responsible for protecting consumers as well as human and animal health. This position provides the opportunity to work with a wide range of labs in the following divisions: Food & Drug Protection - Chemistry, Microbiology, and Pesticide Residue, Veterinary - Animal Disease Diagnostics and Standards - Weights and Measures and Fuel Quality testing. Additionally, the ASC houses a Biosafety Level III lab and an animal necropsy lab. The ASC culture is strongly supportive of safety, training, and professional development in a collaborative work environment.
The Chemist/EHS Administrator is a strategic, consultative and operational role and supports site leadership through developing, implementing and maintaining safety programs for the regulatory focused laboratories and the ASC facilities.
Some travel to three statewide Veterinary labs is required (approximately quarterly).
Key responsibilities of this position include:
Providing strategic direction and technical & scientific advice to promote and foster a strong and proactive culture of safety and compliance.
Planning and coordinating communications and training to monitor and evaluate compliance.
Serving as the point person for Hazardous Waste regulations and compliance with Federal, State and local EHS. This may include helping other Ag Department divisions.
Ensuring effective safety programs in the areas of hazardous waste management, chemical and biological laboratories, industrial safety (maintenance group), office safety, and environmental safety (fuel, oil).

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:
- Experience with hazardous materials management, chemical safety, or laboratory safety.
- Ability to learn hazardous waste management and disposal programs, such as determining disposal methods, contracting with suppliers, and signing manifests.
- Ability to develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS programs.
- Ability to understand the laws, regulations and agency policies governing responsibilities.
- Ability to analyze complex safety and health problems and recommend feasible and effective solutions using technology, techniques, and developments.
- Ability to investigate accidents, determine cause, and recommend remedial action.
- Ability to develop and present training programs on a wide variety of safety topics.
- Ability to influence leadership of the importance of maintaining safe environments in their divisions/departments.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
- "Chemical Hygiene Officer" role (as described by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration).
- Hazardous Waste Coordinator role.
- "Biosafety Officer" role (as described by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention - Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL)).
- Manager of Environmental, Safety and Health (MESH) certifications preferred.
You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.
Bachelor's degree in chemistry from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressive chemistry laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
