Neurotech Pharmaceuticals is an innovative biopharmaceutical company located in Cumberland, RI and Needham, MA, within Greater Boston’s vast biotechnology landscape. The Managing Scientist, Biological Sciences, leads and manages a small team of bench scientists in the development and execution of biological research projects in the advancement of Encapsulated Cell Technology (ECT). This role involves overseeing experimental design, data analysis, and the integration of biological research with other departments to support discovery and development efforts in the advancement of Encapsulated Cell Technology (ECT). This position requires strong leadership skills, extensive experience in biological sciences, and a proven track record in the biopharmaceutical industry.

Job Requirements

  • Hands-on execution of experiments in the lab; design, develop, and optimize cell-based assays, cell line engineering, target validation, and MOA studies.
  • Contribute to biology strategy and new target identification efforts, applying scientific insights to shape discovery approaches and drive innovation.
  • Serve as the biology expert for cross-functional programs to inform program strategy and progress.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data, generate reports, and present findings to senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Stay current on industry trends and scientific literature to bring new and innovative approaches to drug discovery.
  • Manage and mentor bench scientists, overseeing their training in lab techniques, troubleshooting experiments, and ensuring high-quality execution, performance, and overall scientific excellence.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive lab culture that encourages continuous learning and professional development.
  • Supervise day-to-day laboratory duties
  • Collaborate with other departments, including Process Development, Manufacturing, Quality and Clinical Development, to ensure alignment of research objectives and project timelines.
  • Strong understanding of GxP quality guidelines including Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), and Good Regulatory Practice (GRP)
  • Promote a safe and ethical research environment.

Education & Experience

  • Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field with 5+ years of biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience, or M.Sc. with 10+ years of biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience
  • Proven track record of leading and managing scientific teams.
  • Extensive experience with experimental design, data analysis, and integration of research findings.
  • Demonstrated track record of scientific publications and presentations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience as a biology lead in small molecule discovery project teams.
  • Demonstrated expertise and hands-on execution in cellular assay development and MOA studies, proficient in cell biology, molecular biology, and cell line engineering techniques. Experience in CRISPR-based genome editing is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of disease biology and pathways, with a proven track record in solving novel biology challenges and complex mechanisms.
  • Track record in managing more than two direct reports (bench scientists) and driving team performance.
  • Excellent multitasking, prioritization, problem-solving,
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards to inform qualifications and validations.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
  • Exceptional communication, written and spoken and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in using scientific software and data analysis tools.
  • This position may require occasional travel.
