Duties Description Conducts research projects that are broad in nature, require considerable independence in determining methods and techniques, and interpreting research results, and may require the development of new research methods and protocols. Activities may involve work on segments of larger studies involving problems of limited scope and may require a broad range of techniques. Projects require drafting sections of or complete research products. Presents research findings to supervisors and higher-level staff. Recognizes unusual events, and keeps supervisors informed through occasional work decisions. Supervisors provide little immediate guidance and primarily review work to evaluate overall results. Projects may result in professional publications authored singly or jointly.Under the director of the Head of the Placental Modulation Laboratory, which specializes in the study of prenatal influences of childhood neurodevelopmental and somatic growth, we seek a full-time position for a Pathologist Assistant/Histologist (Research Scientist 2). The lab's staff is responsible for human placental tissue for comprehensive gross examination, tissue sampling, processing cutting and staining including immunostaining. The Scientist's work includes 3D gross tissue imaging, 2D gross tissue photography, targeted tissue sampling, tissue processing, embedding of tissue in paraffin blocks, cutting of blocks into 5m thick paraffin serial sections, and application of different stains to the cut slides as directed by Placental Modulation Head Carolyn Salafia MD MSDuties include: Obtains, reviews, updates and records individual information such as medical histories, test results, diagnoses, prescribed treatments and individual responses in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).and clarifies information with individuals as needed. Conducts physical examinations; orders, performs, and interprets diagnostic tests and procedures; determines and/or confirms diagnoses; and treats a variety of specialized medical conditions. Prescribes and/or administers treatments, medication, therapies, vaccinations and other specialized medical care to prevent or treat illness, disease or injury. Conducts follow-up examinations and monitors individual's condition, modifying treatment as needed. Collaborates with other health care professionals and disciplines to achieve treatment goals and objectives and ensure continuity of care. Explains and discussed procedures, test results, diagnoses and prescribed treatments with individuals, families, and caregivers; and answers questions as needed. Refers individuals to other health care providers based on diagnostic and treatment needs. Participates in discharge planning and works collaboratively with other providers and disciplines as needed to facilitate medical follow-up after discharge. Maintains medical documentation consistent with agency, State and Federal requirements. Supervises individual care activities, and prescribes, orders, and oversees the administration of treatments. Consults with and advises other Medical Specialists, physicians, medical providers and health care disciplines on diagnoses and treatment plans; and reviews and approves treatment recommendations. Provides clinical supervision, guidance and training to other medical professionals, nursing and direct care staff, and monitors the coordination and implementation of care. Reviews individual records to confirm diagnoses, and/or ensure that treatments are appropriate for diagnoses and that records are properly maintained. May assign individuals and individual care activities to other Medical Specialists, physicians and/or medical providers; approve leave and track time and attendance; and complete performance evaluations. Functions as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, attends meetings, and serves on various committees and workgroups to improve individual services and outcomes. Assists in the development, implementation and revision of clinical policies and procedures. May develop, implement and/or supervise residency training programs and specialized health care and treatment education program.A working knowledge of the histology lab equipment such as tissue processor, embedding station, microtome, and autostainer is essential.Incumbent will be responsible for preparing the tissue for optical clearing and confocal microscopy.?Working knowledge of DNA/RNA extraction will also be highly desired.Incumbent will be responsible for assuring that the necessary reagents, including formalin, alcohols, embedding media, sera, antibodies, and disposables (histological slides and plastic materials) are ordered and available in the laboratory to perform required tasks, and for the monitoring of storage conditions including temperature and time sensitive bioreagents.Precise documentation of researcher's requests, storage of processed, cut and stained materials and delivery of requested samples to researchers is crucial for order and safety of lab work.The researcher will also be expected to contribute to scientific manuscripts and abstracts.Good knowledge of chemistry, lab work, precision of manual work in tissue cutting, processing, embedding, staining/immunostaining/mounting of thin and ultrathin sections are expected.Additional Requirements Provide after-hours and weekend on-call medical telephone consult on a rotating basis. Provide coverage of primary medical care for people living in a Comprehensive Adult Transitional Home if required, when the assigned provider is not available. Provide medical expertise to Family Care Program and Community Mental Health Nurses as needed. Posted Hiring Salary includes the sum of the statutory hiring rate for PS&T Grade 22 ($82,326) and Downstate adjustment ($4,000). Downstate adjustment is added to the job rate ($104,230).
