Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET)

  • Highwire
  • Burlington, Massachusetts
  • Full Time

Highwire is the Contractor Success Platform for asset owners, general contractors, and facilities managers. The world's most admired organizations - including Skanska, Merck, and Bond Brothers - use Highwire to ensure their contractors and subcontractors deliver great work, on budget and on schedule, by collaborating with them to dynamically mitigate safety, financial, quality, and sustainability risks during capital projects and facilities maintenance. In 2021, Highwire raised a $96 million investment led by the growth equity firm Summit Partners. Highwire is headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts, with a second office in Boise, ID.

To support our objective of delivering only the very best to our users, we are hiring a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET). In this role, you will own the strategy of how we deliver quality software across Highwire's engineering organization. You will drive how we test, and help build a culture where everyone owns quality, not any individual.

Your mission:

The mission of this role is to lead and elevate the quality function at Highwire by defining scalable testing strategies, strengthening our automated testing capabilities, and establishing clear quality metrics that drive engineering accountability - then turning those strategies into action through hands-on implementation.

What you'll do:

  • Own, Champion, and Build a Scalable Quality Strategy. Be the industry expert on quality. Define best practices, lead initiatives that promote a "shift-left" culture, and build solutions that raise the organizational quality bar.
  • Define and Operationalize Quality Metrics. Working with engineering leadership, establish and track clear KPIs to measure quality health and testing effectiveness. Use these insights to guide engineering decision-making and drive accountability.
  • Identify and Solve Gaps in QA Practices. Audit our current test coverage and implement improvements that reduce regressions and improve release confidence.
  • Level up our Automated Testing. Coach engineers through the growth of automated tools, frameworks, and testing capabilities. Design scalable solutions that reduce manual effort and speed up delivery cycles.

Who you are:

  • Strategic Communicator. You distill complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights and tailor messaging across engineering, product, and leadership audiences-all while championing a strong, shared quality mindset.
  • Automation-Driven Engineer. You bring hands-on experience with tools like Cypress, Selenium, or Playwright, and know the right tests to implement that will solve high-value business problems across the stack.
  • Culture Builder. You lead with conviction, promote a "shift-left" approach, and inspire teams to embrace testing as a shared responsibility, not just a QA task.
  • Collaborative Partner. You work closely with engineers, PMs, designers, and leadership to deeply understand our product and challenges, contribute meaningfully to cross-functional solutions, and celebrate shared success.
  • Process Innovator. You're fluent in CI/CD workflows like GitHub Actions, GitLab, or Jenkins, and comfortable working with our DevOps team daily to improve speed, reduce friction, and improve our practices.

At Highwire, you'll play a central role in transforming how we build and deliver software, embedding quality from start to finish. The ideal candidate brings experience designing and executing layered test strategies and is excited to influence a culture of quality in a fast-moving engineering organization. If you're ready to elevate QA practices in a collaborative environment, we'd love to meet you.

Benefits:

Our benefits go well beyond the basics. To support your work-life integration, we built a benefits program that takes care of the whole person, including physical, mental, financial, and emotional health.

  • Medical, Dental, & Vision Insurance. We offer health, dental, and vision insurance to all full-time employees. Best part? You'll be eligible on day one.
  • 401k. We offer a 401k and a 3% company contribution (even better than a match) to help you get ready to retire no matter how far off that seems.
  • Parental leave. We take care of new parents by offering paid time off for births, adoptions, and fostering.
  • Flexible PTO. Our culture of trust and measurement means there's no limit on time off, just an expectation of performance.
  • Mentorship. Our office-based culture fosters meaningful learning, growth, and mentorship for our team.

At Highwire, our approach to compensation is simple: we hire exceptional people and pay them well.

The compensation for this role is comprised of a base salary and an annual performance bonus.
