The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Scientist of Technical Development to join their team.
The Senior Scientist of Technical Development is responsible for the technical development of research projects and experiments in Hematopathology, to support research in optimization of high-complexity flow cytometry assays, and process improvement that will be used for the UW Hematopathology Laboratory and Division. This will include coordinating research efforts in laboratory automation and novel flow cytometry assay development utilizing spectral flow cytometry methods, instrument evaluation and validation, and process improvement. This individual will oversee and coordinate the research, development, and validation of new flow cytometry-based diagnostic testing in the Hematopathology Division and will be directly responsible (in partnership with assigned section leadership) for providing direct technical oversight of the clinical flow cytometry lab to include monitoring and maintaining technical standards; including review of high-complexity quality control data for the flow cytometry laboratory and ensuring test systems used in the laboratory provide consistent quality in all aspects of test performance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Planning and Operations (50%)
In conjunction with the Division and flow cytometry section and informatics leadership, plan, develop, and coordinate research and development of technical workflows for the Hematopathology Flow Cytometry laboratory.
Review current Hematopathology Division's technical development plans and assist in planning for annual division research and development of technical goals and objectives.
Lead automation efforts in the clinical flow cytometry laboratory involving liquid handlers
Facilitate and lead the streamlining and harmonization of wet bench aspects and workflows of the flow cytometry lab.
Develop process improvements in workflow for flow cytometry-based tests
Technical Oversight (30%)
Review high-complexity quality control data for the flow cytometry laboratory.
Ensure testing systems used in the laboratory provide consistent quality in all aspects of test performance, including pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases of testing
Conduct regular inspections of all testing systems; ensure compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements
Participate in monitoring and evaluating the quality and appropriateness of services provided within the departments overall quality assessment and improvement program
Develop and implement clinical validations to be used for flow cytometry test services.
Oversee the initial creation and subsequent revisions of technical development documentation (validation document, procedures) for new and revised flow cytometry assays from research to specifications required by regulatory agencies, including CAP, CLIA, and FDA.
Assist in test interpretation and reporting from research validated tests.
Participate, as needed, in teaching undergraduates, graduate students, residents, fellows, and faculty.
Participate in research and scholarship related to the Division of Hematopathologys mission and programs.
Write technical procedures detailing all aspects of the testing process
Establish and maintain acceptable levels of quality control for each test system; ensure quality control measures are effective at preventing technical failures
Other duties as assigned.
Mentor Supporting Personnel and Colleagues (10%)
Develop training and competency assessment tools to be used when introducing new tests and laboratory instruments.
Conduct educational programs for technologists, students, medical students, faculty, and other trainees; ensure staff are technically competent and aware of recent innovations in related research and clinical literature
Provide technical consultation to technologists as needed for continuing education, technology updates, or informally based on observation of needs
Consult with and provide feedback to staff and supervisors when performance problems are observed, detected, or performance is questioned; assist in follow-up plans; ensure performance issues are dealt with effectively
Provide expert information within the clinical scope of responsibility to UWMCs staff and its clients
Participate in departmental Continuous Process Improvement activities
Lead and support clinical research activities
Act as liaison between researchers and technologists regarding research endeavors
Client Relations (10%)
Interact with laboratory clients (physician and other medical providers) related to aspects of technical development.
Consult with the labs clients; meet the clinical expectations of clients; ensure consultation is available to lab clients on matters relating to the quality of the test results reported.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with laboratory staff, medical staff, and other departments/services; ensure effective communication systems are in place; representation of technical expertise is evident in appropriate forums and communications
Work with laboratory client services to development communication strategy when new tests are implemented
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Masters in clinical laboratory discipline
Minimum of eight (8) years clinical experience within discipline of clinical Flow Cytometry
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Management and administrative experience with increasing responsibility in a clinical laboratory setting
Clinical testing and test development experience in flow cytometry
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
PhD in clinical laboratory discipline OR MD
Expertise with instrumentation, analysis and interpretation in testing area
Competency in necessary hardware and operating systems to support testing, regulatory and educational needs
Excellence in problem-solving skills
Excellence in written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated ability to manage and adapt to change
Work effectively in a team environment
