Job Description


The chemistry department is searching for a chemistry laboratory technician to perform research duties in organic synthesis. The candidate will synthesize, purify and characterize small molecules using a variety of organic chemistry laboratory techniques in consultation with the supervisor.

* Please be aware that funding for this position is awarded through a Grant/Contract over a specified period. Employment for this position beyond current Grant/Contract funding is contingent upon continued funding or new Grant/Contract.

  • Execute a variety of organic chemistry reactions
  • Design multi-step synthetic routes to achieve target molecules.
  • Purify organic compounds using a variety of chromatography methods
  • Characterize organic molecules using nuclear magnetic resonance, high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook of all laboratory activities
  • Other duties as assigned.

The candidate should possess the following academic training and knowledges:

  • Completed two semesters of organic chemistry lecture and at least one semester of organic chemistry laboratory
  • Experience working in an organic chemistry laboratory
  • Familiar with common organic chemistry reaction techniques

EDUCATION:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in chemistry or biochemistry

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Prolonged sitting in front of computer. Walking, talking, hearing, pulling, bending, may carry 10-15 pounds of objects/material, not exposed to extreme noise level, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, taste or smell.
