Youth Online Writers Web
The Youth Online Writers Web, housed in the NYU Steinhardt Department of Teaching and Learning, seeks a part-time researcher to support the project during Summer 2025. The project employs design-based research to study the development of a virtual writing center, in which prospective teachers develop their knowledge and practice of strengths-based and socioculturally-informed writing instruction by mentoring public high school students in their writing.
Position Summary
The part-time researcher will work under the direction of Dr. Sarah Beck, Professor of English Education. Specific responsibilities will include:
- Managing digital audio, video and textual data collected as part of the development of this online mentoring program for youth writers.
- Verifying data and preparing it for analysis.
- Assisting the project director, Dr. Beck, in analyzing data.
- Reviewing relevant literature on writing instruction, mentoring/tutoring, design-based research, and digital writing tools, to support data analysis.
- Working with Box for secure data storage, Excel for data management, Zoom for virtual meetings and digital data collection, as well as qualitative data analysis software (Dedoose and/or NVivo) to manage and code data.
This is a part-time position of 10 hours per week. The position will begin in early June 2025 and conclude by August 31, 2025. Much of the work will be remote, but some in-person meetings will be required on the Washington Square Campus. This position will not include any supervisory responsibilities.
Required Experience:
- Proficiency in using electronic tools and systems (Box, Excel/Google Sheets, Zoom)
- Excellent writing and organizational skills, and attention to detail
Required Education:
- Masters degree in English Education or a related field
In compliance with NYCs Pay Transparency Act, the base salary range for this position is $28-$30 per hour. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
