College/Department Information

Researching Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Stroke, Hypertension, Diabetes... With the increasing frequency of obesity and diabetes, especially in Georgia, cardiovascular disease is reaching epidemic proportions. The Vascular Biology Center at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University knows the demand is high for new and better treatments. Our internationally recognized team of research experts have one goal - to make breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of disease so that we all may live longer, healthier lives.

Job Summary

Candidate will assist with in vitro, cell-based experiments including cell isolation, cell culture, and functional/phenotypic characterization, cell silencing and overexpression, basic molecular biology techniques (Western blotting, qPCR), flow cytometry analysis, cell and tissue imaging, histology, animal handling, breeding, colony maintenance, genotyping, and tissue isolation. Candidate will collect data and perform statistical analysis. Candidate will be responsible for ordering reagents, organizing the laboratory, and work with regulatory agencies (IACUC, Biosafety, Chemical Safety, etc). Candidate will also teach, guide, and assist members of a team of scientists (graduate students, postdocs, and other members of the laboratory), each of whom conducts a series of cell, tissue, and mouse experiments of human relevance. Candidate will create, update, and organize databases to track supplies, reagents, cells, chemicals, etc. in the laboratory. Candidate should have good interpersonal and organizational skills, the ability to multitask, work independently and also as part of a research team.

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:

Maintaining mouse colony through selective breeding and genotyping

Mouse experiments related to cardiovascular and other diseases.

Cell isolation, culture, and analysis.

Tissue histology, imaging, and immunofluorescence analysis

Western blotting, PCR, Flow cytometry and other molecular biology experiments

Ordering supplies, lab maintenance, working with students and trainees.

Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science related to the research area to which the position is assigned and two years of experience in research, basic science or clinical laboratory

OR

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science related to the research area to which the position is assigned with a minimum of five years' research and/or clinical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in cell culture, molecular biology, mouse handling and maintenance, histological analysis.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

KNOWLEDGE

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases or willingness to learn.

SKILLS

Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

Detail-oriented with strong multi-tasking, prioritization, and organizational skills.

ABILITIES

Ability to maintain confidentiality, complete work, and meet deadlines.

Ability and willingness to work with research animals.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).

Pay Band: B9

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
