Leidos is seeking a Project Execution Scientist within the RSS Contract at National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Pittsburgh, PA. NETL is a multi-disciplinary, scientific, and technical-oriented national laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energys primary lab supporting fossil fuel-based energy research. The objective of the Project Execution Scientist is to provide R&D support to help facilitate the execution of research conducted under Geological & Environmental Systems (GES). The Project Execution Scientist will need to understand the research being conducted in the various laboratories, procedures to be utilized in the laboratories, and understand research equipment needs necessary for the conducting of research functions. The Project Execution Scientist providing this support will also have the project management skills necessary for the administrative and technical functions listed below.
This work will involve a multi-disciplinary, scientific, and technically-oriented national laboratory team, participation alongside other data scientists, engineers, geologists, and computer scientists that produces technological solutions for Americas energy challenges. NETL produces technological solutions for Americas energy challenges to support home-grown energy initiatives, stimulate a growing economy, and improve the health, safety, and security of all Americans. Highly skilled professionals at three NETL research sites Albany, OR, Morgantown, WV, and Pittsburgh, PA conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOEs mission to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United.
Location: This position is onsite at the Pittsburgh, PA NETL campus.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Schedule and coordinating experimental testing in various labs.
- Schedule and coordinating maintenance and service for analytical instruments.
- Review test plans to verify they are within scope and the safety standards of the lab.
- Provide recommendations for review and approval on a continuous basis, to ensure the safe conduct of research in the lab.
- Provide laboratory and equipment specific training to research staff.
- Track all laboratory specific training to verify all project personnel are compliant with training requirements.
- Ensure project consumables are available for use when needed and assist in executing purchase requests for ordering supplies.
- Assist research staff in the procurement of lab supplies, materials, and chemicals.
- Ensure proper chemical storage, documentation, handling, and disposal.
- Assist staff to access equipment located in different parts of the facility or for different projects.
- Draft laboratory-specific procedures and other documentation for research operations and safety analyses.
- Assist researchers in identifying performance requirements for new equipment and actively supporting the RP in submitting the procurement request.
- Facilitate the timely replacement of faulty equipment and coordinate the installation.
- Monitor changes to experimental equipment design or experimental practices and facilitate updating communications with appropriate personnel and documentation.
- Assist in commissioning new equipment and test procedures.
- Work with the Safety Support Personnel in the development of the NEPA, ISO and Pollution Prevention and Waste Minimization forms and any other environmental components of the safety package.
- Assist with onboarding new personnel to the lab, including verifying all training and proper documentation is completed.
- Assist Safety/Quality Annual Assessments as a representative/liaison between the teams and researchers.
- Operate within DOE safety guidelines and maintain safety training and chemical and chemical inventory and assist in annual assessments.
- Prepare access paperwork for personnel card access to lab spaces.
- Continuously maintain the project safety file that is kept in the laboratory.
- Attend the initial and annual permit assessments to assist with answering questions regarding project operations.
- Support drafting and facilitate completion of work orders designed to achieve project objectives and due dates.
- Provide support during utility and ventilation outages to ensure proper equipment shutdown or reduction in R&D operations are performed in a timely manner.
- Provide recommendations on new equipment needs for refresh or capability expansion.
- Provide support for the installation of new equipment as the person of contact for offsite technical support as well as for onsite technical teams. Coordinate staff training, if needed, with offsite technical staff from the vendor.
- Provide support for initial troubleshooting of malfunctioning equipment and coordinate the necessary resources to resolve issues in a timely manner.
- Prepare and maintain a document/file of lab instrumentation with service contracts, including service contract end date. If requested, coordinate service for equipment. If instrumentation has service contracts, identify the contract period of performance dates and facilitate service contract renewals.
- Assist in maintaining appropriate housekeeping and ensure waste management and disposal protocols are followed.
- Perform periodic laboratory walkthroughs with a focus on general housekeeping, adherence to chemical hygiene and sample labeling, PPE use and availability, proper chemical storage is maintained and resolving issues in these areas with staff as needed.
Requirements:
- A Bachelors Degree in a STEM field and 4+ years of prior relevant experience or a Masters Degree in a STEM field and 2+ years of prior relevant experience.
- Professional communication skills, both verbal and written, to obtain or provide information.
- Strong organization skills and the ability to effectively use applicable tools and techniques to communicate with various audiences.
- Experience working with chemical lab equipment and/or characterization techniques, e.g., microwave digestion, PCR analysis, ion chromatography (IC), carbon analysis, X-ray diffraction, and FTIR.
- Experience working around laboratory equipment with unique safety considerations, e.g., equipment operated at high temperature or high pressure.
- Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a structured, professional laboratory environment and who is familiar with the safety procedures and processes that must be followed.
- Experience handling a variety of chemicals, hazardous materials and/ or hazardous waste.
Salary Range for this position: $95K to $100K

Pay Range: Pay Range $85,150.00 - $153,925.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary.
