The Department of Integrative Biology invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

A Research Associate position is available in Dr. Molly Burke's laboratory in the Department of Integrative Biology at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. Research in the Burke Lab addresses broad questions in evolutionary biology using long-term selection experiments in model systems, primarily Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The lab integrates approaches in quantitative and population genomics, and computational biology to investigate the genetic basis of complex traits. The Faculty Research Associate will contribute to ongoing projects that apply multi-omics techniques to understand trait evolution, with primary responsibilities including bioinformatics analysis, manuscript preparation, and occasional molecular genetics and bench-based work. This position offers the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research in a collaborative and supportive academic environment.

Key Responsibilities

50% - Research

  • Conduct statistical and computational analyses of existing genome-scale sequencing datasets, including genomic, transcriptomic, and other multi-omics data.
  • Use OSU's high-performance computing infrastructure and develop custom scripts as needed to support data processing and visualization.
  • Apply standard bioinformatics tools to analyze DNA sequences, genotypes, and gene expression profiles.
  • Contribute to experimental design and hypothesis development; collection of new data to support novel research directions is encouraged.

40% - Scholarly Products

  • Write and co-author manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals in molecular biology, genetics, and evolutionary biology.
  • Prepare and present research findings at scientific conferences and workshops.
  • Contribute to the development of grant and fellowship proposals by identifying funding opportunities and drafting proposal sections or providing supporting analyses.

10% - Mentoring and Supervision

  • Provide mentorship and technical support to graduate students and other lab members.

What You Will Need

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in computational data analysis, including the use of scripting languages such as R and/or Python
  • Familiarity with genomic or transcriptomic data types (e.g., whole-genome sequencing, RNA-seq)
  • Evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Evidence of strong self-motivation and carrying projects to completion
  • Demonstrated ability to promote diversity and inclusion in the research environment.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Postdoctoral experience in genetics or related field.
  • Research experience with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, including molecular genetics or experimental evolution approaches
  • Proficiency in analyzing transcriptomic data (e.g., RNA-seq), including differential expression
  • Proficiency in analyzing time-series data, such as genomic sequences from longitudinally sampled populations
  • Experience managing research projects, including coordinating timelines, tasks, and collaborative efforts
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and reproducible research practices

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This position is primarily based in a research laboratory and office setting on the Oregon State University campus. The work involves prolonged periods at a computer and may occasionally include standard molecular biology benchwork (e.g., pipetting, centrifugation, gel electrophoresis). Some lifting of light lab equipment and supplies (up to 25 lbs) may be required. Work is generally conducted during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.), though occasional evening or weekend hours may be needed to meet research deadlines or accommodate experiment timing.

Travel to scientific conferences or workshops may be required 1-2 times per year.
