Drug Product Development (DPD)
Our Drug Product Development team is committed to CMC design, development, and commercialization of innovative drug products to improve patient lives. As a Scientist in the Drug Product Development - Materials Engineering and Crystallization (MEC) Group, the main responsibilities will be to develop crystallization processes and tailor the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) material characteristics to balance drug substance processability and drug product performance. The successful candidate will drive insight into how API particle properties impact the bioavailability and manufacturability of the drug product. At BMS, MEC engineers participate in multidisciplinary teams to drive development of novel medicines and deliver scalable, robust processes for drug substance and drug product. The candidate is expected to have exposure to crystallization fundamentals and an ability to learn API crystallization process development.
Primary activities and responsibilities will include:
Work in a multi-disciplinary team to ensure drug substance attributes are robustly controlled and satisfy the needs of the drug product
Independently execute lab experiments and report contextualized results
Phase-appropriate crystallization process development and troubleshooting
Powder property assessments and particle engineering
Salt and form control strategy development to support material selection and delivery of API quality attributes
Basic solid state material characterization
It is expected that the candidate will work with a broad range of materials, such as crystalline and non-crystalline APIs including small molecules, peptides, oligonucelotides as well as drug product intermediates that will be used in the design of robust oral and injectable drug product formulations. Experience in laboratory experimentation is expected and experience with independent laboratory development of crystallizations is preferred. Familiarity with solid state characterization techniques such as particle size measurement, polarized light microscopy, XRD, BET, TGA, and DSC is desired. In addition, an understanding of process analytical techniques (Raman, FBRM, EasyViewer, Blaze, ATR-FTIR, NIR) and their application to crystallization process development is desired. Experience with process modeling, molecular simulation, machine learning, or data visualization is desired.
Requirements :
Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or related field with 02 years of industry experience; or M.S. with 24 years of experience; or B.S. with 57 years of experience
Fundamental understanding of thermodynamics, kinetics, and transport phenomena.
Excellent problem-solving skills.
Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to identify and solve problems through independently designed and executed experiments.
Experience in polymorph control, particle engineering, and process scale up is highly desired.
