Stepan is seeking an Analytical Research Chemist to join our R&D team at our Global Technology Center in Northfield, IL. In this role, you will report to an Analytical Manager. The position will primarily require the planning and executing of advanced analytical techniques, especially Mass Spectrometry (MS) and Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS). Projects will require capabilities in the separation and analysis of surfactants and polymers and/or blends thereof using state-of-the-art LC/MS techniques.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and execute advanced analytical techniques, especially Mass Spectrometry (MS) and Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS), in support of various assigned projects.
Has complete responsibility for independently managing and leading projects including planning, scheduling, coordinating and following-up.
Present technical information such as, new products, technologies, methods, etc. to customers and industry conferences.
Plays mentor role in department work group, providing technical advice and training to colleagues. May direct the work of one or more work group members.
Must be self-motivated and able to foster collaboration with other team members. Build constructive relationships with other work groups and departments to build bridges and remove barriers; relates well throughout the organization.
Actively participate in safety/waste programs and steadfastly adheres to safety policies/standards.
Use available resources and databases to regularly review technical information, patents and literature pertinent to fields of expertise.
Document and communicate technical work and findings via verbal updates and an organized, up-to-date laboratory notebook, record time allocation per policy, produce well written project reports; for both personal work and through direct reports.
Qualifications- Laboratory experience in analytical chemistry, particularly related to separation and chromatographic techniques for the characterization and analysis of complex mixtures.
- Demonstrated abilities to manage multiple complex projects and independently develop the strategy for the overall project load.
- Demonstrated ability to perform self-directed projects and communicate results in a clear, concise and timely manner using communications tools appropriate for the target audience.
- Experience with data and error analysis, stochiometric and formulation calculations, and instrument/method validation.
- Advanced understanding and ability to utilize combinations of analytical techniques, such as MS, GC, HPLC, FT-IR and NMR as well as separation techniques in the pursuit of analyzing and characterizing complex surfactant and/or polymer mixtures.
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Science, or closely related field; 0 5 yrs experience in industry.
- Masters in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Science, or closely related field; 5 10 yrs experience in industry.
Pay Range: $84,000 - $113,000
The salary range for this position is determined by considering a variety of factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, and the location of the position.
