The Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking applicants for a Post-Doctoral Research associate in public health, with an emphasis on quantitative analysis. The successful candidate will work under the direction of Dr. Pavel Chernyavskiy and Dr. Matthew Gurka on a variety of biomedical research projects, including but not limited to:
Applications and methods development in the domain of functional data using novel data sources, for example: images as covariates, data encoded from participants' facial expressions, biomechanical tracing of post-mortem and in-vivo subjects. (40% effort)
Epidemiological research in maternal, child, and perinatal health using primary and secondary data, for example: evaluating areal indices (COI, ADI, SVI) as predictors of maternal and child health outcomes. (40% effort)
Candidate-initiated research leading to peer-reviewed publications, poster presentations, and internal/external grant applications, for example: publication in high-quality public health, biostatistics, and epidemiology journals; presentations at conferences pertaining to public health; NIH R01/R21/R03 applications; Virginia state-wide grant competitions (e.g., Jeffress Trust); UVA-wide competitions (e.g., Precision Health Initiative, 3Cavs). (20% effort)
Percent effort allocation is approximate and anticipated to be dynamic, reflecting the joint priorities of the supervisors (Drs. Chernyavskiy and Gurka) and the candidate. Other duties may be assigned to tailor the post-doctoral training experience to the candidate's career goals, such as: teaching, mentoring/advising graduate and undergraduate students, serving on department and university-wide committees, etc. The initial appointment is for 1 year, with an additional year granted upon successful progress during the first year.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD in a quantitative discipline, for example: Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Engineering, Mathematics conferred before the start date. ABD at time of application is acceptable.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology.
Track record of publication in high-quality peer-reviewed journals
Evidence of cross-disciplinary collaboration
This position is offered as a 12-month appointment, with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. This role is designed as a training opportunity in preparation for a full-time academic or research career. Postdoctoral Research Associates work under the supervision of a senior scholar, focusing on full-time research or scholarship, with the freedom to publish your findings.

Compensation:
Determined based on educational background and experience, in accordance with NIH guidelines.
Physical Demands:
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
