Translational Safety Pathologists provide scientific leadership and play an active role in the process of drug development from early-stage research through marketed products. Working in a team environment, Translational Safety Pathologists participate in and may lead the strategic design, implementation, and data analysis of both GLP regulatory and non-GLP investigative studies to ensure the comprehensive, highly integrated safety profiling of Genentech drug candidates. In this position, the Translational Safety Pathologist will be actively involved in the development and implementation of digital pathology solutions for safety studies in addition to supporting regulatory development of Genentech molecules.

The Opportunity:

As an integral member of this dynamic team, you will be:

  • Providing veterinary clinical, technical, and scientific expertise on in-house and CRO studies through necropsy, clinical pathology, and histopathology evaluations and pathology peer review.

  • Closely collaborating with toxicologists and study operations professionals to create streamlined, innovative translational safety programs for Genentech drug candidates; and to author regulatory documents.

  • Working independently to leverage literature to develop and optimize best-evidence arguments in support of data interpretation or experimental approaches.

  • Advancing applications of digital pathology for greater scientific insights and workflow efficiencies by working closely with image analysis scientists

  • Collaborating with in vitro systems scientists to characterize and qualify assays for the assessment of toxicity

  • Designing and conducting in vitro or in vivo investigative and mechanistic studies in collaboration with Toxicologists and other Subject Matter Experts.

  • Participating in and lead interdisciplinary project teams.

  • Representing and sometimes act as team leaders for Genentech/Roche in meetings with regulatory authorities as needed.

  • Providing functional area mentorship and leadership, frequently as Therapeutic Area Leaders and/or Expert Working Group leaders within Translational Safety.

  • Participating and often lead safety biomarker and diagnostic development programs, particularly as related to digital pathology/ image analysis.

  • Influencing Toxicologic Pathology and Industry Standards via the publication of high quality scientific manuscripts

Who You Are:

  • A DVM/VMD or equivalent and board certification in the American College of Veterinary Pathology or European College of Veterinary Pathology.

  • PhD or equivalent experience in pathology, with hands-on experience in the development and validation of AI tools for digital pathology

  • Working knowledge of the development and utilization of large language models to mine toxicology/medical data

Relocation benefits are available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, California is $184,700-$343,100. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
