Job Title: Project Engineer - Capital Projects

Position Summary
We are seeking a Project Engineer - Capital Projects to join a growing engineering team focused on delivering high-impact capital improvements across a network of manufacturing facilities. This is a critical role that leads end-to-end execution of capital projects to enhance facility safety, efficiency, and productivity. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on, technically skilled engineer with strong project management experience in chemical processing, specialty materials, oil/energy, or pharmaceutical manufacturing. You'll work cross-functionally with operations, vendors, and third-party contractors to design and execute upgrades, equipment installations, and process improvements across multiple sites.
Key Responsibilities
Lead full-scope capital projects from conception and design through execution, commissioning, and closeout
Serve as primary point of contact for third-party vendors, engineers, and contractors
Develop project scopes, cost estimates, construction packages, and timelines
Design and specify process equipment (e.g., pumps, tanks, heat exchangers, boilers, mixers)
Perform or oversee technical drafting and P&ID development as needed
Evaluate design tradeoffs and value-engineering opportunities for long-term impact
Manage construction bidding and vendor selection process
Oversee project execution, site safety protocols, and quality control standards
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Operations, HSE, and Finance
Conduct post-project analysis and manage invoice reconciliation and closeout
Travel to regional project sites (approx. 25-30%) across the Midwest
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, or related discipline)
Minimum 5 years of experience in a manufacturing or processing facility
Proven experience managing capital projects (cradle-to-grave ownership)
Familiarity with process equipment design and fluid systems engineering
Hands-on CAD/drafting ability (2D/3D AutoCAD preferred)
Ability to work independently and make sound decisions with limited documentation
Skilled in contractor oversight, budget management, and project scheduling
Willingness and ability to travel across Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Kentucky, and other Midwest sites (overnight travel required)
Preferred:
Experience with chemical processing, oil/energy, or pharmaceutical facilities
Familiarity with construction permitting, HAZOP, and MOC procedures
Knowledge of API 650/653 and mechanical integrity standards
Hydraulic modeling experience a plus
Understanding of environmental regulations and permitting processes
