Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Senior Scientist to join the Discovery Biotherapeutics Department in San Diego. The ideal candidate will possess a demonstrated expertise in protein sciences with an emphasis on protein purification, process optimization, and characterization. Responsibilities will include a range of activities related to protein purification and characterization of complex antibodies. The ideal candidate will be proficient in the design, optimization, and execution of multi-step purification, analytical data interpretation, troubleshooting and formulation of final product, while maintaining a highly productive and collaborative culture.
Responsibilities
Manage purification lab as a subject matter expert in purification and downstream processing.
Prioritize/support the workload and troubleshoot complex purifications.
Strategize lab operations, train junior members of staff, and coordinate activities with expression.
Represent Protein Sciences across multiple program teams as part of the core team.
Interface with key stakeholders on protein deliverables and timelines.
Demonstrate a track record of initiative, creativity, organization, and independent performance at a high level combined with attention to detail and adherence to timelines/deliverables, and documentation.
Participate on project teams to discover, optimize, and manufacture antibody-based biologics, and should be highly effective in collaborating with internal and external team members and CROs.
Special emphasis will be placed on automated antibody purification, which will involve working with Cytiva AKTA (Pure/Avant) and Unicorn software.
The candidate will show an independent ability to design purification methods, understand biochemical concepts and interpret data to generate and improve design.
Mono and bispecific antibody purification: concentrating supernatants, preparation and packing of chromatography columns, and conducting endotoxin free chromatography, including operating preparative and analytical chromatography systems.
Deep understanding of the principals of purification; CEIX, HIC, SEC, Affinity, Multi-modal, AEIX and how to apply them to complex antibody modalities.
Perform in-depth analytical characterization of molecules: endotoxin measurements, protein quantitation assays, analytical HPLC chromatography (anHIC, anSEC), Capillary electrophoresis (CE-SDS and cIEF)
Storing, inventorying, and ordering department supplies and chemicals and preparing chemical solutions according to department procedures, specifications, or supervisory instructions.
Participate on cross-functional teams by performing assigned experiments and offering technical advice at team meetings; shares technical expertise with other colleagues; trains or provides guidance to other personnel, if needed.
Maintain a neat, clean, and orderly work environment.
Experience in external partnership management, due diligence for technology evaluation, project leadership and matrix management are a plus.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelors Degree with 7+ years of academic or industry experience
or
Masters Degree with 5+ years of academic or industry experience or
or
PhD with 2+ years of academic or industry experience
Preferred Qualifications
Masters Degree with 5+ years of academic or industry experience in Bioengineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related discipline.
Extensive hands with protein purification. Purification of other entities (viruses, antigens, nanoparticles is a plues).
Antibody/protein analysis and characterization including, but not limited to SDS-PAGE, A280, CE-SDS, cIEF, AnSEC, AnHIC, Endotoxin.
Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
Strong written and oral communication skills are essential.
Excellent time management skills and multi-tasking capabilities.
Automated liquid handling using the Lynx.
Sample inventory management.
Experience and knowledge of protein and antibody sequences, antibody databases and data management systems, and ELN.
Bispecific antibody purification is desired.
Must be very detail-oriented and organized, with excellent time-management and multitasking skills.
Have outstanding analytic and problem-solving abilities.
Display excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and presentation skills, as well as the ability to interact tactfully and effectively with employees at all levels of the organizational structure.
Must be highly self-motivated, detail-oriented, well organized and work effectively as part of a team.
The starting compensation for this job is a range from $122,830 - $148,800 plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility).
The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.
