RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages and leads a technical team performing critical laboratory analytical testing.
  • Identifies, initiates, designs, directs, and conducts research in analytical chemistry leading to the development and implementation of new analytical methods for the company. Maintains competency in cutting edge analytical chemistry and chemical theory and researches the feasibility of using this technology in the analysis of food products.
  • Utilizes forensic techniques to identify foreign materials (chemicals and objects) related to food, ingredients, materials, and processing.
  • Fulfills the role as a technical consultant/troubleshooter when more generally defined analytical chemistry problems at the Innovation Center or plants are beyond scope of the plant/corporate personnel.
  • Initiates, coordinates, and oversees systems to improve assay efficiencies within the laboratory.
  • Validates methods to prove the analytical method is acceptable for its intended purpose.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Master's, or Bachelor's, degree in chemistry with 5+ years of food chemistry experience.
  • Experience with analytical procedures and equipment such as microscopes, GC, and HPLC utilizing UV/Vis, ECD, MS, MS-MS, ICP, etc.
  • Understanding of advanced scientific principles and experience with ISO 17025 is a requirement.
  • Demonstratable leadership skills as it relates to initiating, planning, managing, and executing complex projects.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and chromatographic software packages.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including superior team building and management skills.
  • Organization and participation in collaborative studies.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation, initiative, and creativity.
  • Excellent communication skills including effective listening, speaking and writing.
  • Ability to work in an inclusive team environment, treating others with dignity and respect.
  • Must be a Citizen or National of the United States, a lawful, permanent resident, or have authorization to work in the United States.

LOCATION: Global Headquarters, Austin MN

A comprehensive relocation package to the Austin, MN area will be offered, if required.

At Hormel Foods, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. The base hiring pay range for the Scientist / Associate Senior Scientist - Chemistry - Research & Development role is between $72,950 - $118,825 per year, and your actual base pay within that range will depend upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, job-related knowledge, skill set, level of experience, and geographic market location.
