Senior Scientist Position Summary The National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI) at the University of Nebraska is seeking applications for a Senior Scientist position that will encompass both executing technical scientific approaches/tasks and development of business opportunities, leading technical tasks and identification of resources that support Department of Defense and other U.S. Interagency sponsors. Senior Scientist will be responsible for providing support to research programs over a capability area centered on biological threat detection and countermeasure development for Department of Defense (DoD) and United States Government (USG) sponsors. Senior Scientist will work in a laboratory setting alongside a multidisciplinary team that develops, tests and investigates novel materials, methods, and systems for chemical and biological defense applications, that will be conducted in both field and laboratory settings. Additionally, Senior Scientist responsibilities will provide subject matter expertise for next generation sequencing, serve as technical lead of project tasks, mentor junior staff, draft experimental test plans, and regarding all aspects of next generation sequencing and forensic level analysis supporting Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) project, while directly collaborating with NSRI staff and other entities within the CWMD community. Primary place of duty will be Melbourne, FL and the surrounding areas. Periodic travel will be required to University of Nebraska System Campuses, NSRI Offices in Nebraska, Virginia and Maryland and other locations based on project needs. The position reports to the Director of Sample Exploitation and Sequencing. Based in Melbourne, Florida with a facility near Cocoa Beach Florida, this position is part of a government funded project and employment is contingent upon continued client funding and performance. Duties and Responsibilities Developing and executing Biological based laboratory projects, drafting and tracking project cost, scope, performance, and schedule for CWMD projects Managing multiple stakeholder relationships Report project status, written and orally, both internally and externally Implement and manage change when necessary to meet project outputs Execute and manage day-to-day laboratory duties associated with CWMD projects Ability to research and adapt new cutting-edge methods to address Sponsor requirements Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to meet project deliverables Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or project management from an accredited university or college 4+ years' technical and/or military experience working in support of DoD, USG or related projects Familiarity with project budgeting and tracking Excellent written and oral skills Excellent organizations skills and time management Experienced working as a part of a multi-functional team This position requires the individual to be a U.S. citizen and must be able to obtain and maintain U.S. government security clearance eligibility. This position may also require a Counterintelligence (CI) Polygraph to meet contractual requirements. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Desired Qualifications Experience as a technical project manager Experience in CBRN related mission area Current DoD security clearance Additional Information: This position requires work in secure facilities and handling classified information. Up to 25% travel may be required for sponsor meetings, collaboration, and site visits. Salary: starting at $77,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
