Scheduled Hours 40 Position Summary The Yarbrough Lab investigates novel diagnostic methods for infectious disease. This position performs research study experiments (including routine and novel assays on blood and body fluids), preparation of materials, execution of laboratory procedures, and documentation in accordance with local, state, and federal clinical research requirements. This position provides opportunities to gain experience in clinical research and the potential to contribute to scientific publications. Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine assays according to laboratory and research standard operating procedures, including specimen processing, instrument maintenance, cleaning and minor troubleshooting, lab supply inventory and storage; may perform special assays with supervision by a senior medical technologist or supervisor.
  • Performs microorganism culture and understands and uses aseptic technique. Prepares reagents used in laboratory procedures.
  • Assesses quality of samples for processing and culture. Recognizes problem situations and participates in problem solving; informs supervisor and lab leadership of unusual situations and requests technical assistance.
  • May assist with validation of new assays; compiles data for supervisory review; utilizes database, spreadsheet, and word processing programs.
  • Complies with all regulatory and client requirements for testing and documentation.
  • Demonstrates a general understanding of assay methods and clinical relevance; participates in relevant continuing education.
  • Assists supervisor with other duties and special projects as needed.

Working Conditions

  • Requires the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Work is performed in Biosafety Level 2 clinical research laboratory.
  • Requires operation of lab equipment and computers.
  • Requires some physical effort.
