Job Description

The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for performing waived, moderate complexity, and high complexity testing on patient specimens. This role requires correlating and interpreting data utilizing critical thinking skills and a strong knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments. The position involves teaching and training students, new employees, and residents/medical students. The scientist will effectively resolve problems, maintain equipment, prepare reagents, and enter test results data. Competency assessments are to be completed successfully and timely.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all assigned testing accurately and efficiently.
  • Acquire, maintain, and utilize thorough knowledge of principles and theories to effectively perform testing and respond to inquiries regarding testing.
  • Stay updated with changes in technical procedures.
  • Consistently follow established protocols for interpreting and verifying test results.
  • Recognize abnormal or inconsistent results, investigate appropriately, and notify leadership of potential problems immediately.
  • Complete work assignments in a timely manner by prioritizing and multi-tasking.
  • Adjust to fluctuating workloads and cooperate positively in situations where additional work is required.
  • Maintain workstation cleanliness and organization.
  • Work independently and as part of a cohesive team to ensure timely and accurate completion of departmental work.
  • Communicate possible delays, issues, or potential problems to leadership.
  • Perform required quality control procedures consistently and accurately, documenting results and corrective actions.
  • Follow specific procedures for instrument operation and maintenance, performing basic troubleshooting and contacting technical support when necessary.
  • Participate in training for students, new employees, medical students, and residents, covering training materials thoroughly.
  • Engage in continuing education and professional development opportunities.
  • Recognize and investigate problems thoroughly, taking corrective action as necessary and involving peers when appropriate.
  • Successfully complete all competency assessments and follow required performance improvement plans.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in CLS, Medical laboratory, MLS, ASCP, and Blood Bank.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) from ASCP or AMT.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Medical Laboratory Science.

Work Environment

The position operates on a rotating schedule of 7 days on and 7 days off, with working hours from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
