Test Development Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking a Test Development Engineer to support new product introduction and provide secondary support for contract manufacturing sites. The role focuses on designing high-quality and reliable test methods integrated into automated test systems for fiber optic lab test equipment. You will collaborate with R&D during the new product introduction phase and continue to support products throughout their lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with R&D at the Ottawa office.
  • Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) for market-leading products.
  • Provide Design for Test (DFT) direction to R&D at the concept stage of new product development.
  • Develop and continuously improve test solutions for the product portfolio.
  • Design, develop, and influence automated production systems to implement the product test strategy.
  • Devise manufacturing, service, and configuration strategies for new products, optimizing calibration and testing.
  • Plan detailed projects to ensure production systems are developed, debugged, and validated for production pilot runs.
  • Partner with R&D and Manufacturing Engineering to develop reliable test systems, jigs, and fixtures for contract manufacturing.
  • Utilize system evaluation tools effectively in NPI to ensure stable test systems are deployed in manufacturing and service.
  • Install and validate production systems at the final production facility, typically at contract manufacturing sites in Asia.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum 4 years of experience developing automated test processes, both hardware and software.
  • Proficiency in LabVIEW and Python programming.
  • Experience with either RF or timing products, including GPS communications and precision oscillators.
  • Familiarity with National Instruments TestStand.
  • Ability to control instrumentation and build test racks, including software development for instrumentation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with manufacturing, NPI, or factory operations.
  • Knowledge of test equipment, C/C++ programming, and LabWindows CVI.
  • SQL database programming experience for test record and data management.
  • Demonstrated project planning and management skills.
  • Understanding of process improvement and data analysis, including Lean principles or equivalent experience.
  • Self-starter with strong teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency in English, with Chinese language skills considered beneficial.
Work Environment

This position is based in the Ottawa, Canada, within the Position Navigation and Timing (P&T) Business Unit. The role may require travel up to 15% of the time to contract manufacturing sites. The work involves defining manufacturing test strategies, developing systems, and deploying them into manufacturing, with a focus on software development for automation, electrical hardware knowledge, and project management.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $65.00/hr.
